mencoder and x264

It's been a while since I encoded anything so I don't know when it changed, but my mencoder seems to have forgotten about x264. It knew about it before, but now it's not there when I type

mencoder -ovc help

The x264 package is installed, so I don't think that's the problem, although if I try to build through ABS, I get the line

Checking for x264 ... no (in libavcodec: no)

Anyone have any suggestions?
