Lenovo X61 - xrandr not detecting conected LCD monitor

First, I am quite new to Arch, and Linux in general.  I have tried search the Wiki, these forums and the web with no success at finding anyone with the same problem. (not to say I couldn't be missing something)  In all cases (?)they where able to fix it through things like the proper nvida graphics driver (not applicable to me..)
I have a Lenovo X61 (with a "Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller" chipset)  I have an external LCD monitor (a Samsung SyncMaster 760V tft) plugged into the VGA output,  I am unable to get a dual monitor working. (or even mirroring)

xrandr -q produces:

Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 0.0*
   800x600 0.0
   640x480 0.0

The monitor plugged in is not mention, even after restarting and reconfiguring X with the various automated tools.  The edits I have made manually to xorg.conf did nothing.  Is there something I am missing here.

On startup, when GRUB appears, I can press Fn+F7 to switch between the laptop panel and the external monitor, but once Arch starts booting I am stuck on that monitor (which will stay at the 1024x768 resolution, even though the external monitor's resolution is 1280x1024)

I would appreciate any help & suggestions. (Or a link to someone with the same problem who fixed it?)  I hope I have given enough information.

Could you fix it or does anyone else have a solution?
