glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

Hi Fellows,

since I updated my system glxgears is not starting but throwing an seg fault instead.

I am running a
ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]
with the ati drivers (xf86-video-ati 6.12.99.git20091014-1).

I attached the result of a 'glxgears -info' as I assume it might contain useful information.

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

There was a major Xorg upgrade today yes. I got new xserver, mesa and new xf86-video-intel 2.9.1-1. Most seems to work OK, but trying to run glxgears or glxinfo now suddently causes total system freeze. Atleast I can not access anything, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace (yes I have reenabled it in xorg.conf) don't do anything and the fan starts going like crazy (so probably the CPU are going full tilt) and I must take a hard shutdown by long press on the powerbutton. Well, if running glxgears are the only thing that will cause this I will refrain from doing that, I just hope nothing like that happens in daily use of the netbook. I could run glxgears fine with the previous xserver.

Machine are Acer Aspire One D150. My graphics hw:

lspci | grep Graphics
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

glxgears does not run here too after the latest update but my machine doesn't crash with either glxgears or glxinfo

$ glxgears

Funny thing is that dmesg says nothing tongue

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

same goes for me, glxgears throws the same error message like ROOKIEs, and running more complex things like extremetuxracer has the same system freeze effekt that mokkurkalve describes (although I'm still able to ssh into the box, but trying to reboot from there hangs at some point).

This is with a radeon 4670 (I know, no 3d accel as of yet, but at least the SW-Rasterizer was working fine before the update)

Hmm, I am not sure about this. I am using KMS with radeon, which is the driver provided by the package xf86-video-ati (AFAIK), so I think it's strange if it isn't running after all.
A call to 'lspci -v' shows the following:

Kernel driver in use: radeon
Kernel modules: radeon, radeonfb

In my case dmesg is more talkative as I get a new message each time I try to start glxgears.

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

Add "nomodeset" at the kernel options in menu.lst, and reboot. I guess something is going wrong in your system.

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

I already have "nomodeset" as a kernel option, also kms doesn't seem to be working here, I've tried loading radeon as a module like the wiki says but no joy, except for these two things everything seems to be working properly, I have direct rendering and xv (oh and firefox seems to go a little faster after the latest xorg-* update ... placebo effect?).

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

Have you rebuilt the initramfs like the wiki says ?

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

Thanks for your help flamelab.
I disabled KMS and glxgears worked like a charm.
I am a bit puzzled now as I had glxgears working with KMS before the update. So probably something went wrong with the update after all.
I activated KMS by following the instructions in the wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI) and already tried rebuilding the ramdisk without any change. I am not using a xorg.conf.

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

For me it doesn't work with kms disabled ... but I did use a framebuffer ... when I can I'll try without a framebuffer and with kms disabled.

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

As previously mentioned I'm using the intel driver. I've also been using xorg.conf and uvesafb framebuffer driver. So for testing purposes I now deleted xorg.conf and regenerated the initramfs without any framebufferdriver at all (I have not been using KMS, I tried it once but it didn't work). But the result remains the same; with the new xserver I get total X freeze if trying to run glxgears.

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

I was playing around a bit and found a 'solution'. I fetched the PKGBUILD for libdrm-newest from AUR and compiled and installed it. And now glxgears is working again...

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

This solution didn't change anything for me. Still full freeze when trying to run glxgears.

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

The situation actually got worse. Later I got full freeze at xserver initialization (login).
Anyway, happy ending: Installing libdrm-newest and xf86-video-intel-newest from AUR fixed every issue; glxgears run fine and all. big_smile

Didn't work for me. I'm still getting Segmentation fault and dmesg shows

Re: glxgears causing segmentation faults since last update

I got  the same error as ROOKIE's post #4

The followings are the observation with HD3450 Ati card in hp dv5 laptop  (nomodeset in kernel line)

Driver : xf86-video-ati

with and without frame buffer setting issue remains the same. Also tried with and without xorg.conf

Driver: xf86-video-radeonhd

without xorg.conf glxgears works (145 FPS) but the desktop is not usable (fonts rendering / images are very poor)
with xorg.conf (generated by x) glxgears fails.
