Hi,
The last update of archlinux I did brought me a version of mplayer whith high CPU usage and slow video. The CPU usage is 100% (If remember well it was much less than that, my CPU is a dothan 1.5GHz). The audio is played normally but videos are played slower than they should be.
Anyone having this problem?

Which video card and driver have you installed ?
Offline
My video card is :
VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]
My driver is radeon:
I'm using:
xf86-video-ati 6.12.4-1
libgl 7.5.1-2
ati-dri 7.5.1-2
I also tried the libcaca video output and the CPU usage is also 100% (without rescaling the video, libcaca did not let me rescale the movie)

With Smplayer and Xv output, you have the same problem ?
Try xf86-video-ati-git as well.
Offline
OK with smplayer and xv output, videos play very well!
If I switch to gl output, the problem is present (smplayer almost freezes). If I switch back to xv output it is okay!
A very big drawback is that xv output does not allow to display film through the TV-out of my ATI card (ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]).

with xf86-video-ati-git the gl output does not work, and worst xrandr cannot find output "S-video"!
xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1400 x 1050, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1400x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
I think I gonna switch back!

In my upgrade I got kernel from 2.6.30 to 2.6.31. The kernel now has this ATI stuff which could be the problem?
1.4. ATI Radeon Kernel Mode Setting support
This version adds Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) support for ATI Radeon. Hardware supported is R1XX,R2XX,R3XX,R4XX,R5XX (radeon up to X1950). Works is underway to provide support for R6XX, R7XX and newer hardware (radeon from HD2XXX to HD4XXX).
I've observed at boot that when modules are load, the resolution of the virtual console is modified, let say increased, probably to the native resolution of my display (1400x1050). Could it be framebuffer and that would be uncompatible with gl/ati outputs?

I'm trying a downgrade of kernel all dependencies! Let see if it works and if I come back here soon!
sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-firmware-2.6.30-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel-headers-2.6.30.5-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-2.6.30.6-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/glibc-2.10.1-4-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/binutils-2.19.1-5-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gcc-4.4.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gcc-libs-4.4.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xulrunner-1.9.1.3-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/firefox-3.5.3-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

OK, donwgrading from kernel 2.6.31 to 2.6.30 solve the problem and mpalyer works fine! Looks like 2.6.31 needs some manual actions or some modifications/improvements.
If I understood well, kernel 2.6.31 provide the module for ati?
Does that mean that xf86-video-ati is not needed anymore? What about ati-dri?
Well, well, I don't know!
I got the loaded modules related with radeon for kernel 2.6.30 and 2.6.31:

As I can see ati S-video output is not working natively with kernel 2.6.31. Redhat may have though a patch for that:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=497055
I think I could post a bug report for the missing S-Video output as redhat team seems to have released a working patch?
I don't know if the gl output problem freezing problem of mplayer may be dependent on any configurations?

Wow, I tried the very last updates here to see if things gets improved (some packages are from today on the mirror I use):
[2009-10-31 17:02] upgraded xorg-server (1.6.3.901-1 -> 1.7.1-1)
[2009-10-31 17:02] upgraded mesa (7.5.1-2 -> 7.6-2)
[2009-10-31 17:02] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.30.6-1 -> 2.6.31.5-1)
[2009-10-31 17:00] upgraded ati-dri (7.5.1-2 -> 7.6-2)
Well, it still seems very buggy. Let resume 3 possibilities presented in ATI archwiki page:
option 1) trying the new KMS stuff:
- X server could start after I (re)moved xorg.conf
- xrandr does show only a single screen and no S-Video of course
- mplayer plays very slowly
- I got no 3D acceleration (I though may have miss an option for that?) maybe:
(II) Loading extension DRI2
(II) LoadModule: "ati"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ati_drv.so
(II) Module ati: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.6.3.901, module version = 6.12.99
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 5.0
(EE) module ABI major version (5) doesn't match the server's version (6)
(II) UnloadModule: "ati"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ati_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "ati" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
(II) LoadModule: "vesa"
I'm switching "back" to xf86-video-ati and check again!

OK! Now things are getting better. DRI2 works fine with late updates and no git packages. The only remaining problem is the missing S-Video output from xrandr... like in redhat bug:
looks like it has been solved on redhat devel on 2009-09-08:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=497055
Could not find a patch on that date?
Offline
Looking at redhat bug:
They use a package called xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.13.0-0.3.20090908git651fe5a47.fc12.i686
Is that what we call xf86-video-ati on archlinux. If yes current version is 6.12. Version 6.13 may be necessary in order to get S-Video output...
Offline
Well no S-Video output yet from xrandr, something is missing:
xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1400 x 1050, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1400x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
1400x1050 61.8*+ 60.0
1280x1024 60.0
1280x960 60.0
1024x768 60.0
800x600 60.3
640x480 59.9
I'd like to know in which package is the problem kernel, libxrandr, xrandr?
I think this problem is worth a bug report now!

Wow! II think I'm switching back to kernel 2.6.30 (if I can) and wait till it is solved!
Offline
Wow, things are getting bad downgrading looks much complicated!
Look:
sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-firmware-2.6.30-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel-headers-2.6.30.5-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-2.6.30.6-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/glibc-2.10.1-4-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/binutils-2.19.1-5-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gcc-4.4.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gcc-libs-4.4.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xulrunner-1.9.1.3-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/firefox-3.5.3-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

Anyone could get in touch with an ATI S-Video output owith kernel 2.6.31?
Offline
Well, I eventually tried kernel 2.6.31 apending option radeon.modeset=0 with all newest packages I could found and looks like everything works also with S-video output !!
For /boot/grub/menu.lst, I apended radeon.modeset=0 and it works well:
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev... resume=/dev/... radeon.modeset=0
Here are the packages I use and that works (for me):
ati-dri 7.6-2
xf86-video-ati-git 20091031-1
xorg-server 1.7.1-1
xorg-server-utils 7.5-2
kernel-headers 2.6.31.4-2
kernel26 2.6.31.5-1
kernel26-firmware 2.6.31-1
mesa 7.6-2
