nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

After today's upgrade, X fails to start with segmentation fault. When I downgraded nvidia/nvidia-utils to 185.18.36-2, xorg-server to 1.6.3.901-1 and related xf86-input-*, it starts to work. Interestingly, neither combination of nvidia/nvidia-utils to 185.18.36-2 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1, nor nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server to 1.6.3.901-1 works. After downgrading and playing it a little bit, I lost my original crash logs.

I guess I should post the problem here to see if anyone is seeing the same problem, before going back upgrading and hitting the bug again. Of course, if you are interested in my Xorg.0.log, I can produce it again.

And by the way, I'm using arch64 on a lenovo t61p with nVidia Quadro FX 570M. I guess the problem is new, and I don't have any luck with google, yet.

Only nvidia 190.x is compatible with Xorg server 1.7 for now.

Where did you find the pkgs to downgrade? I use the nvidia-96xx drivers and they were never even upgraded - so nvidia here doesn't work at all now.

In need to downgrade b ut don't have the pkgs. Help.

You need at least a geforce 6 to use xorg-server 1.7 atm. It's unclear if nvidia will add support for older cards in future but I wouldn't be surprised if they wont.

Because they are still in my /var/cache/pacman/pkg. I guess you can find old packages on some arch rollback server. I don't know exactly where they are. Probably somebody knows, here.

They usually add support for newer kernels and xorg-servers in the legacy drivers, but no new features.

xf86-video-nouveau can be a good alternative for those that have a <=5xxx card, but don't want to hold back xorg.

Last time I tried, it works badly with KDE. And it has no power management support, which is quite important on a laptop.

Confirmed. nvidia-driver-96xx doesn't work with new Xorg server 1.7.
Xorg crashes with:

I have also had a problems after update to Xorg 1.7 and nvidia-96xx. I have downgraded to Xorg 1.6 since on my Ti4200 with "nvidia" glxgears give me something like 3000 fps compared to 300 fps with "nv" driver. Even though now everything works fine there surely should be a BIG warning before this update!

It's a known issue and Arch can't do anything about it. nVidia dropped support for the oldest cards, and support for the 173* and 96* cards hasn't been finished yet.

I ran into xserver update problem today, I needed to downgrade, obtained older version of xf86-input... used http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Downgrade_packages (already had xserver and utils in cache) then used

sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-1.6.3.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-utils-7.4-7-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xf86-input-evdev-2.2.5-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xf86-input-keyboard-1.3.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xf86-input-mouse-1.4.0-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz

Hope that helps until a fix is available

I just encountered this error with nvidia-173xx, I guess the only solution is to manually search for and install the
older xorg packages? And wait for nvidia to possibly* add support for the new xorg?

Well I kept getting a blank screen and frozen comp upon starting X server. jxy's solution worked for me (commented out TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder in xorg.conf). Not an ideal solution, though, of course...

Is anyone having trouble with the new xorg/nvidia and using a custom kernel? I rebuilt the nvidia package to correspond to the custom kernel (like I've done 100 times before).

It says it can't find the nvidia module.

I can't get X to start either, though it may be a different problem as there is no segfault. Right now I'm writing this in elinks.

Seems that there is a problem with the keyboard mappings.
