Not true.  I even have KWin compositing working (with XRender backend) and a few desktop effects, all with fine stability and performance.  Suspend works perfectly with KMS; haven't tried hibernation, but I think there are still some issues with that.

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

After I upgraded my OS yesterday, I have not been able to run it since. Not sure if it's a segfault or another issue, my screen just turns black and I can only see a "glittering" cursor. My laptop needs a hard reboot - only this works.

Seems I'm not the only one sad

That's what I get. (not exactly what I would describe as "glittering", just a blinking _ in the upper left)

It's what happens when KDM fails to get X running. You can Ctrl+Alt+F* to a tty and run startx to see what errors you may have (see above for mine).

I downgraded X related packages (having to type them all in manually in a tty, why must pacman be so cruel) until it worked (Nvidia is 190 still, the problems are with the new X).

I think my problems are centred around xorg-xkb-utils-7.5-1

That worked for me too! big_smile
Thanks, I would never have thought of trying something like that.

But commenting this line was annoying (I don't want my external LCD screen to be my primary display!), so I changed it to the following instead:

Option "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "DFP"

According to /usr/share/doc/nvidia/README, it has quite the same result (default order is "CRT, DFP, TV", and "display devices that are not listed will be implicitly appended to the end of the list, in their default order"). And it works for me: no segfault anymore.

This obviously is a bug in the driver... I'll post this on this thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … ?p=2115534

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

Packages that I downgraded:

xf86-input-evdev 2.2.5-1
xf86-input-keyboard 1.3.2-2
xf86-input-mouse 1.4.0-2
xf86-input-synaptics 1.1.3-1
xorg-font-utils 7.4-3
xorg-server 1.6.3.901-1
xorg-server-utils 7.4-7
xorg-utils 7.4-4
xorg-xkb-utils 7.4-2

I will eventually get around to updating them one by one to see where the point of failure it.

Downgrading xorg-server and the packages that depend on it (xf86-input-evdev and xf86-video-vesa) worked for me.

Good to know.  Thanks.  I guess next time nvidia breaks my system, I'll give nouveau another try.

That wasn't enough for my system, I would still get 2D rendering that was totally broken; I had to downgrade (yes, by manually inserting each package in the ignore package line in pacman.conf) pretty much all packages in order to get back a sane desktop. That goes for both my desktop with Nvidia driver and the laptop with ATI.
Updating Xorg-server and its related files are the things I fear most about Arch.

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

Whatever my problem was, it went away after I reinstalled the newer packages. My theory is that Pacman messed up the install of some packages and made broken files. A couple other packages (like vlc) were also effected. Unfortunately, by fixing the problem I have destroyed any evidence that could help find the actual problem that occurred.

@Zibi1981:  The "file too short" message means file corruption.  Try pacman -Sf nvidia nvidia-utils.

Thanks a lot, that helped. Along with system update and the new KDEmod 4.3.3 big_smile I'm still getting some WARNINGS, but fortunatelly no ERRORS. Will have a closer look at them now. Any help appreciated smile

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

nvidia 190.42 is 'supposed' to work with xorg-1.7....
Since it doesn't, shouldn't a bug report been filed?

(Sorry to ask, i'm quite new here.)

FWIW, works here as well. GeForce 9800 GTX+. I think it's just the older cards that are having issues, is that right?

Me to, with 8600GT. Downgrading packages fixed it.

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

This is weird. I have the exact same laptop as TS (thinkpad t61p, quadro fx 570m) running Arch 64 and all my problems disappeared when I installed nvidia 190.42-1 and Xorg server 1.7.1-1 (kernel 2.6.31.5-1).

See here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=81993

Everything works out-of-the-box right now. I have not done any special tinkering.

I think why it works for you is because you're not running any gtk apps. As long as I stuck with qt/kde nothing was wrong but as soon as I launched something gtk (deluge, easytag, nvidia-settings, etc) I started getting crashes. But the problem was definitely the nvidia packages because downgrading it fixed the issue.

The nvidia driver is working for me but the only gtk app I use is firefox, maybe it's an exception. Also my graphics card is a geforce 8700m gt, if it's relevant.

Not running any gtk apps?  I started GIMP with no problems. Also isn't firefox using gtk?
