Just a summary, to possibly help others here.
As reported here by others, I encountered difficulties after upgrading xorg-server to 1.7.1.
My problems were slow effects in kde (eg slow dragging of windows) and blue stripes appearing on the screen.
My situation:
- I disabled mode switching by the kernel command line option radeon.modeset=0
- I do not use an xorg.conf
- I have an old AGP Radeon RV280 card
I did the following:
1. change the extra server in /etc/pacman.conf to Server=ftp://atviras.lt/archmirror/extra/os/i686/
2. downgrade xorg-server and its depencencies (did not help)
[2009-11-02 11:10] upgraded xf86-input-evdev (2.3.0-1 -> 2.2.5-1)
[2009-11-02 11:12] upgraded xorg-server (1.7.1-1 -> 1.6.3.901-1)
[2009-11-02 11:12] upgraded xf86-input-keyboard (1.4.0-1 -> 1.3.2-2)
[2009-11-02 11:12] upgraded xf86-input-mouse (1.5.0-1 -> 1.4.0-2)
[2009-11-02 11:12] upgraded xf86-video-ati (6.12.99.git20091014-1 -> 6.12.4-1)
[2009-11-02 11:12] upgraded xf86-video-vesa (2.2.1-1 -> 2.2.0-1)
3. downgrade mesa and its dependencies (did not help)
[2009-11-02 11:17] upgraded mesa (7.6-2 -> 7.5.1-2)
[2009-11-02 11:25] upgraded libgl (7.6-2 -> 7.5.1-2)
4. Downgrade ati-dri and its dependencies (this solved my problem)
[2009-11-02 11:25] upgraded libgl (7.6-2 -> 7.5.1-2)
[2009-11-02 11:25] upgraded ati-dri (7.6-2 -> 7.5.1-2)
[2009-11-02 11:25] upgraded mga-dri (7.6-2 -> 7.5.1-2)
5. Ignored above-mentioned packages with IgnorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf
6. Changed the server for the extra repository back to my old one in /etc/pacman.conf

I've had a lot of troubles too. In the end I had to downgrade, and didn't take the time to figure out which package is to blame - because I'm getting complete system freezes and don't want to hard reboot my machine more than a few times.
Anyway, I'm writing this because i'm using the xf86-video-intel driver. Your lead points to a problem with the ATI driver, but it looks like it comes from somewhere else ...

I had X windows resetting itself frequently. I'm using the xf86-video-ati driver. I've downgraded the driver and xorg server and now I'm ok. This seems to be a slip-up by the xorg community?
I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts...

Yes, the trouble seems to be in the ATI driver.
And I think it does not help that my Radeon car uses the AGP bus, instead of PCI-E.
I guess nobody tests AGP anymore :-(
We can only wait for an update

I have experienced also problems with a nvidia card (GE9300 using nv driver) at home computer and an ati card (Radeon X3o0 using radeon driver).
In the first case the X server gets freezed, returning a black and unresponsive screen. In the ati case, I got problems with xrandr as I have two monitors plugged, using DVI and VGA outputs. It doesn't detect correctly the outputs.
The only way I found was to downgrade this packages to the previous version:
xf86-input-evdev
xf86-input-keyboard
xf86-input-mouse
xf86-video-nv / xf86-video-ati (depends on the card)
xf86-video-vesa
xorg-server
This only was useful to get the system working, but it doesn't solve the problem.

Thanks Eric, now I know when a solution might be forthcoming.
I hope that a patched mesa will not be necessary with the new kernel?
(to get rid of the graphical glitches I mean)

I'm having X windows resetting itself frequently and a downgrade like in the first post didn't solve the problem ![]()
EDIT: Fixed with the xorg-server update ![]()
