install issues

Hi all,

I am trying to install arch to my Dell Latitude D410 (w/ Pentium M, runs Ubuntu 9.10 currently) and am encountering significant trouble. My problem is that I cannot boot from disk or USB to run the installation. Rather than booting from disk, it goes straight to the screen where I choose which OS to boot. On some of my attempts, it will show that GRUB is trying to load (with a 5 second countdown or something--it is only on screen for a second) but then goes to the choose OS screen. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

(1) I have tried to boot from CD and USB device
(2) I have downloaded each of the available files (FTP ISOs, CORE ISOs; USB FTP ISOs, USB CORE ISOs; and ISOLinuxISOs and both i686 & x86_64) and tried to boot each of them at different times
(3) ..

Ubuntu is the only OS on my comp now...

Re: install issues

I've installed Arch recently on a Dell Latitude D400, which should be very similar to your machine. I used the USB core iso. You have to use i686 since this machine is not 64-bit. Once the Dell logo appears, I hit F12 to obtain a temporary boot list, selected the USB device and booted from it. Not a single problem.

Re: install issues

Okay, it didn't work. Do I need the .img file? That's the one I downloaded and it did the same thing (GRUB for a second and then on to the choose OS screen).

Re: install issues

how are you putting the disk image onto your usb stick? are you using the dd command like it says in the beginner's guide?

Re: install issues

I created my USB image exactly as described in this guide:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … #USB_stick

You need a linux machine for this, of course.

Re: install issues

I am using my XP desktop, downloading the file, and copying the file to the USB stick.

Re: install issues

you can't just copy the file to the usb, you need to use the method madtux referenced, there's a windows method on there as well.

Re: install issues

evr is right, no way just copying the image to the usb stick. I thought that you are using Ubuntu, thats why I mentioned the wiki article. However, as evr said. the wiki article contains a link to the Windows method.

Re: install issues

OK, I think that took care of it. Sorry, I didn't see the beginners guide!

Thanks again!

Re: install issues

I would strongly recommend that you follow the Beginners' Guide when setting up Arch. Theres incredible information in it and it makes the installation so much easier.
