T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Hello, thanks for reading.

The title explains the problem pretty well.  I can connect to any given network just fine through wicd, but after a short bit of use the networking entirely stops and if I try to make any changes I get what I assume is a kernel panic and the whole system stops responding, short of the caps lock blinking.

Relevant outputs include:

dmesg:

DMA: Out of SW-IOMMU space for 9100 bytes at device 0000:03:00.0

I get a whole bunch of times after it first appears in dmesg.  I've googled this error without the address on the end and it seems there isn't much of a solution that I'm aware of.  I don't know what to do from here!  Guidance is so very appreciated.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

try disable ipv6, I use all day without any issue (netcfg, wifi-select), never test it with wicd

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

I have exactly the same problem. Its so annoying! isn't there anyone who has any idea?
I already have the ipv6 module disabled but that doesn't work.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

I disabled the IPv6 module as well.  No good, error persists.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

can you test if with networkmanager or netcfg the problem persist? Or simply with standart commands like:

ifconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 essid YourESSID
wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
dhcpcd wlan0

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

I alway connect like that and yesterday i tried wicd and networkmanager but ik makes no difference.
The laptop works fine until i turn on torrents or get very much internet traffic.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Same here, I've tried without wicd.  The problem reproduces exactly the same.

Also, I've googled around and it seems like this is a recurring bug.

I tried passing iommu=force to the kernal during boot and from there, the card works slowly.  I also get a different error array in DMESG from there.  The end of it is as follows:

Linux version 2.6.30-ARCH (root@T-POWA-LX) (gcc version 4.4.1 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 31 07:30:28 CEST 2009

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Hi

This is a common issue on x86_64 with >4GB memory mapped for doing 32 bit DMA transfers using an IOMMU (can be emulated via software like in your case [intel], or via hardware[amd]) when some driver leak memory.

You are using the default value (64MB) reserved for this:

PCI-DMA: Using software bounce buffering for IO (SWIOTLB)
Placing 64MB software IO TLB between ffff880020000000 - ffff880024000000

To workaround this, you can try to increse this area for example to 128M or 256M. For doing this, you need to pass a kernel command line parameter in GRUB: swiotlb=65536 (for 128MB) and swiotlb=131072 (256MB)

Two scenarios can happen: solve the issue, or the issue will not appear inmediatelly, just work for more time.

Please report this to upstream on bugzilla, this is the best way to solve this type of issues,

(sorry my bad english)

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

djgera, Thank you for your post!  As well, your English is fine.

I tried your suggestion and it makes the wireless operate fairly well for significantly longer than before.  Next I'm going to try swiotlb=262144 and see if THAT doesn't fix the problem.

Here is my updated dmesg after this failure:

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

good smile

one more tip, your problem will dissapear completely if boot your system with "mem=4G iommu=off". Of course, your system will have only ~3.3GB of RAM instead of 8G sad

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Since I've moved to that large allotment, I've noticed significant increase in the performance and stability of the wireless.  However, I can not perform a system upgrade this way.  It still fails after some time.  Can you explain this problem further to me?  I'm not sure I'm understanding exactly what's going wrong here.

Next I'm going to try it with even more:  swiotlb=524228

Also, I've never filed a report with bugzilla.  Is there a formatted template or a process I could use to do this?

Thanks again, you've helped me immensely.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Even with swiotlb=524228, I still can not complete a system update. sad  However, I can browse the web and download individual apps! big_smile

Is there a way that I can possibly clear out the IOMMU?

Thank you very much djgera, gonna test it out today!
If it works youre my hero!

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Thank you Digera. I have used iommu=force and swiotlib=131072 and that seems to have cleared the IOMMU problem on my Toshiba L510-016  running X86_64 Linux with the new Realtek R8192se_PCI wireless driver.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

oops.. i spoke too soon... but the wireless stays up for 15 or 20 minutes of streaming audio. I will try with larger values of swiotlib, and I think it will be a good workaround while the solution is pending. As for the bug, is it with the driver or with the kernel? I am not sure I understand the implications.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

The option "mem=4G iommu=off" works like a charm. I now hav 3.3gig ram indeed but i its already hard to use 2 gig ram tongue.
And do i need to report the bug to the arch upstream?

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Hello all,

This type of iommu problems is when driver leaks memory, so the leaked memory can not be used again. Incrementing the iommu space just only "delay" the problem for more time, does not resolve the issue.

As I said before, this is only happens on x86_64 when RAM is mapped in address greater than 4G, under this conditions an IOMMU is needed to do 32 bits PCI-DMA transfers.

So the real solution is that the driver needs a fix. An alternative workaround as I said before, is limiting the system to 4GB and disabling iommu (mem=4G iommu=off) (both parameters are needed)

So for example if your system have 4GB of physical RAM, normally your memory map is (simplified):

-------------------
0G - 3.5G (usable RAM)
--------------------
3.5G - 4.0G (this space are reserved for PCI memory mapped transfers)
---------------------
4.0G - 4.5G (usable RAM) (this is only accesible on 32 bits system with PAE enabled or under x86_64 system [because PAE is always enable])
----------------------

So when mem=4G is passed to kernel you can see only 3.5G of RAM.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

This driver is not part of the stable drivers, is in "staging" area [#1]

I guess can send the report of this to the LKML (Linux kernel mailing list) with  CC to one of the author/maintainer (Andrea Merello <andreamrl #at# tiscali #dot# it>

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Actually, I didn't get the driver package from the kernel at all. It is supposedly from Realtek (although not official) and I got it from
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/34090326/ … bit.tar.gz
referenced on a similar thread on the Ubuntu forum.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/401126

The 8192su driver is for usb adapters only, I believe.

Maybe the other users here got theirs elsewhere though.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

So what do I have to do to file a bug as an effected user?

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Maybe send an email to wlanfae <at> realtek <dot> com, this is the contact information that appears in source files and also to Andrea Merello <andreamrl #at# tiscali #dot# it> because sources are based on sources by this guy.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Hmm 10 minutes ago it happened again... But i don't have a realtek wireless card, I have a intel pro 5100. Is it only related to to realtek wireless cards? He crashed when i started deluge en started 4 torrents tongue

I used the (mem=4G iommu=off) boot kernel paramaters.

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

weird, the same error is imposible, because the iommu is disabled. Maybe another issue is trigger. Post your dmesg wink

Re: T400 realtek wifi fails after short use, given IOMMU errors in dmesg

Miitch, If you are getting the same kind of error messages,  the temporary workaround solutions will likely be the same. But you will have to raise a separate bug report on the kernel because I presume you are using a standard kernel driver for your pro5100, which is not the same as the one we are using for the Realtek chip.
