LIRC remote troubles

So, I followed the steps in the wiki but when I ran irw and mashed buttons there was not output.

When running lircd I do get this:
lircd: WARNING: you should specify a valid gap value

Also the light on the receiver lights up whenever a button is pressed. It is a usb receiver if that counts for anything and several people said it worked out of the box with mythbuntu so I should be able to get it working.

edit: I ran lsusb and found that the receiver is recognized (i think?)
