Incomplete downgrade?

Ever since the kernel26-2.6.31x my wireless card has not worked.  I have avoided the problem by downgrading to  2.6.30 using an old rescue disk.  I lost that disk and so downloaled the latest 2009.8 CD to use as a rescue disk.  Now when I downgrade I get:

:: Loading Modules
FATAL: Could no load /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/modules.dep: No such file or directory
FATAL: Could no load /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/modules.dep: No such file or directory

and nothing that requires a module works.

I have checked and both kernel26 and kernel26-firmware are the 2.6.30xxx versions.   I also tried downgrading the kernel-headers that were recently upgraded. 

Does anyone know why my system asks for the 2.6.31 modules?
