xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

Hi,
I've got this error code when I'm trying to 'startx'. /var/log/Xorg.0.log is clean there is no such an error or missing module warning like ( EE ) or ( WW ) . I can not understand the newer versions of xorg please help me with this.  I tried enable / disable input-hot plug thing double checked all configurations of hal , xorg but where this module comes from? what is it?

PS:I'm using intel i915

best regards.

EDIT :  i learned that " 'module fbcon not found' usually means fbcon is builtin, which is ok" thanks to #xorg group @ freenode.  I instaledl xfce rather than e17 and it worked. What a shame!

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

Hi,

I'm seeing the same error message, and I'm also no longer able to switch back to the console via Ctrl+Alt+F{1-5}. I wonder if those two are related - could you check if switching to the console works for you?

Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

my key combinations also everything works fine now.  I and some people think that it's a warning about framebuffer console which is not set on kernel-compilation time. I followed the instructions on wiki:xorg (without xorg.conf) part and it's solved.

Could you provide more details? I have no idea how to fix this problem. My xorg server give me the same error. I'm using intel i915 too.

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

I really don't know the details but i'm guessing that extra framebuffer console resolution allows you get specific resolutions on console without X. But for X you don't need it... like console-fonts, also your locale can be different from your X using...
Try making a minimal xorg.conf without detailed resolution sizes and descriptions (also without driver names).  Put just identifier names and which layout uses which device.   Then  see /var/log/...Xorg-related-logging-file.. sometimes a missing module or font halts the X, without throwing an message... I am still using my X with  this error (it just stays in logs smile

I just solve this problem (for me): downgrade my X from 1.6.4 to 1.6.3. Because problem was not in fbcon, my X server died with SIGSEGV. I don't khow why, but downgrade solved this problem

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

I have the same problem. It happenned after trying to install the packages intel-dri-git and xf86-video-intel-git from AUR:

$ yaourt -S  intel-dri-git xf86-video-intel-git

Finally I could not do it. Then I reinstalled the package f86-video-intel from extra but now I can't enter in the xserver using my default user. Only I can enter in the xserver using the root user.

I guess I must remove or change some configuration made for that packages installed from AUR, but I don't know which sad

Any idea is welcome smile

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

Are you trying it with a desktop manager or just by typing "startx" ? i'm using xfce,  i located suitable modules on startup by just following wiki (also a login manager).  typing "startx"  does not work for me either.

I had written kdm, in DAEMONS array, in the rc.local file. The system froze when tried entering in the KDE login manager. Then, I disabled kdm erasing it from rc.local. Now I can start KDE only typing, as root: startx and after starkde. Using my default user I can't enter not even in xserver by typing: startx.

Excuse me my poor english

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

maybe you have a missing font or module (I'm not sure) any other error ( EE ) in  "/var/log/Xorg.0.log"  file?  also try not to load dri module in Xorg.conf...

In the first one I only can see:

(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.
(WW) Disabling Mouse0
(WW) Disabling Keyboard0

You can see there is not some failure loading a module as in the another file, however, anyway I can't start xserver using my default user.

Using the root user I can start x using or not the xorg.conf file

How can I do for not load dri module in xorg.conf?

What article, exactly, you read from the wiki xorg?

Thanks so much for the help smile

EDIT: I have crated a new topic, please answer thither http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82499

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

sorry for late respond,
this explains a minimal xorg.conf file  you let HAL to handle everything: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … _xorg.conf
and  intel specific part : http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_Graphics
i dont use this specific options for 3d i mean i dont put this to my conf file.

also.  . . gpasswd -a username video        wink
maybe you forgot to start intel related modules -> it is described in intel related part.

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

I've got the same Fatal Error message with fbcon.
But Slim, XFCE4 and E17 i can run without any problems.
This just happen when i try to start kdm and kdemod.
I don'nt know how you fix it?
And it doesn't matter if i try it with a xorg.conf or not...

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

well, like say in this thread http://www.pubbs.net/archlinux/200910/29623/ the fbcon module error can be ignored. The notices record too. The error from xkbcomp is not the reason of this trouble (obviously or you could enter in kdemod). I think you problem is here:

All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/framebuffer_blacklist.pacsave

can you show us that files? framebuffer_blacklist and framebuffer_blacklist.pacsave

Hi
Ok, first, i moved all none .config files out of the modprobe.d folder. the already existing framebuffer_blacklist.conf was empty, the .pacsave was full. Even if i take the pacsav as .conf, i got the same error message.
A friend of me has the same trouble since last xorg-server update.
any more ideas? with a downgradet xorg-server it works and with a fresh install, the new one works too...

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

I could run X as root, but not as an ordinary user.  The ordinary user got "FATAL: module fbcon not found".  Turned out there was an .xinitrc file in that user's home directory.  Once I deleted that, X worked.

But how did that .xinitrc file get there?  Was a fresh install.  Must be that useradd -m created it.

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

I had this same problem: after an X11 upgrade, I could no longer start xmonad using startx, getting the same message about fbcon.

This thread did not provide a solution, but a guy on the Fedora forums had the same problem with Fluxbox. He found a solution (in the ArchLinux forums!): delete ~/.fluxbox. So I tried deleting ~/.xmonad, and that worked.

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

I had the same problem, I installed Centos minimal without GUI. Searching around learned me that I missed following group packages: "Desktop" and "Desktop Platform" (check with yum grouplist). I installed these with:
yum groupinstall "Desktop" "Desktop Platform"
yum install xorg-x11-font*

Sorry to post here in the Archlinux forum, but I since I found part of the answer here and I think it is valuable to both Archlinux and others Linux distros, I posted my solution.

Re: xorg fails, FATAL: module fbcon not found [SOLVED]

CentosNoob, thanks for the hints. Remember, however, that each distro has its own way to handle packages which might not be applicable to others. (Well, I did not check in this case.)

This thread has gone its way. Let's keep it read-only now.

Closing.
