Framebuffer 1440 x 900.

Does anyone know how to get 1440 by 900 in a framebuffer? I would like my framebuffer to match my monitor res. I tried doing:
fbset -xres 1440 -yres 900

nothing. I checked the framebuffer settings again, and it was the same as before. fbset is installed. Should I run the commnand again as root?
