Athlon XP-M (mobile)

I ordered an Athlon XP-M Barton (2500+) from newegg on Sunday and recieved it today and just wanted to post here to let everyone know what a great processor this is for desktop computing. I know it sounds funny, but the it turns out that the mobile variety of Socket A Athlon's are the creme of the crop of any given fabrication. These things run at normal speeds but with only 1.45v of Vcore. So far I've overclocked this thing to 2.28Ghz with little trouble. All these chips come multiplier unlocked so if your board supports changing multipliers these things rock.

Now, off to do some benchmarks.

Just an update. I've managed to push this chip upto 2.4Ghz with 1.725v Vcore but I don't like having the voltage that high. I downed it to 1.65v, the same as the desktop chips default Vcore, and managed 2.3Ghz at 16.5x140 (I'm still using PC2100 DDR). This chip is designed for the 133(266) Mhz bus so if you have an older board that has multiplier settings these chips provide some performance boost until everyone can afford a new 64-bit processor.

I've had a 2600+ for about eight months now.  It's a fun cpu.

I've heard stories of people getting the mobile CPUs upto 2.7Ghz with the proper cooling. I'm just using a Thermaltake Volcano 9 HS/F on mine so I'm happy where it ended up. Faster than an XP 3200+ for half the price. 

Now, my next bottleneck is memory bandwidth.. but I'm probably just going to leave everything alone for awhlie until it gets broken in.

Memory bandwidth? You could use dual-channel memory couldn't you, if your mobo supports it?

I'm using dual channel right now with the nForce2 chipset but I'm only using PC2100. I could run PC2700 or PC3200 in my board but don't feel like paying for any new memory right now. I've been told that faster memory makes a big difference in gaming situations but I'm happy with my current setup. I'm just going to wait and save up for an Athlon 64 machine.

I'm running a water cooled system.  I am at 2.675 ghz right now with a 1.85 vcore.  My cpu temp stays at about 40 degrees.
