[Wiki] Alternative Install Methods

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … m_a_LiveCD
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … her_distro
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fas … nux_System

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … _USB_stick
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … _a_USB_key
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Usb … ch_Install

I think the above two groups of three are HEAVILY overlapping, and should be tidied up and merged into one page for each group.   I have the time, expertise, and will to do so (I just installed Arch on a laptop from within a different LiveCD environment), but I want to get the blessing of the powers at be first.

Sorry if this is not how these things are handled, I'm new to Arch (big Gentoo user, I'm testing and liking Arch on my laptops)... and couldn't find anything relevant as to how these sorts of things are handled.

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Usb … ch_Install

That needs to be deleted, as you get much better advice that actually works here:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … _USB_stick

But the above needs to be renamed from "Install from USB stick" to "Install To USB Stick".   The title is misleading.   You're putting Arch on the stick, not installing Arch from it.

I combined the following:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … m_a_LiveCD
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … her_distro
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fas … nux_System

Into this:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … ting_Linux

So perhaps if everything is fine with that, change the original three to redirects.

Re: [Wiki] Alternative Install Methods

I recently tried to install Arch the way described in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … her_distro , only to find that pacman.static has been dropped. So I set out to find an alternative way to do it, and after some cluttering and headscratching I found one using the arch-core.iso. Im not much of a wiki writer, but if anyone is interested I could try to write one. Or I could just post my idea and you guys could see if you deem it fit for you fantastic wiki pages.

Re: [Wiki] Alternative Install Methods

Please have me excused if this is deemed unsafe or otherwise not good practice.

The idea is to copy the contents of 'root-fs.sqfs' from the core or ftp iso onto an empty partition, then use 'mount -o bind' to mount /dev, /sys and /proc to their respective directories in the new Arch install. Then copy over /etc/resolv.conf and chroot the new install, then edit out the part about the 'releng' repository in /etc/pacman.conf, and from there continue as normal.

I dont know if this is a safe of good way to do an Arch install, but it got me a working system.

Brilliant distro by the way, I really like the Arch way doing things. I like the feeling of a non-cluttered desktop smile

Re: [Wiki] Alternative Install Methods

Hey, GT, welcome to Arch.  Hadn't seen this done before, nice work.
