SUCKLESS BOOKMARKS? Part Ѻ1: How do you organize your bookmarks?

Welcome all archers!

This is part number 1 (out of 2) which is now written as a result of (following) these posts:

Arch Linux Forums / Midori rocks
Arch Linux Forums / wow, software really is fast... sort of
Arch Linux Forums / "Faster" Init, could it work? Are there "Daemon Managers"?

...and, of course, many other articles/opinions/posts etc. with the same concept!

SUCKLESS BOOKMARKS? Part Ѻ1: How do you organize your bookmarks?

Question: How do you organize your ways (bookmarks) to the world wide web?

Please, dedicate a little of your time to answer this question.
Part number 2 will show up after your answers
note: part 2 (at least the opening part) will, most likely, NOT going to be based on your answers

Thank you, for your co-operation smile

Re: SUCKLESS BOOKMARKS? Part Ѻ1: How do you organize your bookmarks?

I don't have bookmarks locally except two bookmarklets.

The sites that matter enough I know the URLs for. Anything I want to read in the future goes to Instapaper, because it's accessible from anywhere, lets me strip out graphics, and has a killer iPhone app. Any reference information for projects I'm working on goes to Delicious and is tagged appropriately.

In both cases, I can access them from anywhere and quickly find content to read/the content I'm looking for.

I use the Firefox bookmark bar. At the moment I have 16 folders in the bar. It fits using small 3-4 letter abbreviations of the name. All my (400+) bookmarks are divided in these folders. I don't use subfolders except for groups of URLs that I want to open once a day and once a week.

I just throw them all in Firefox's "unsorted bookmark" list. I never have to find one by hand - I just start typing the name in the address bar and let Firefox find it for me. This is quite possibly my favorite Firefox feature, and one of the prime things I'd be missing if I switched to a lighter browser.

Re: SUCKLESS BOOKMARKS? Part Ѻ1: How do you organize your bookmarks?

i use a custom script with uzbl.  urls are listed in simple text files categorized via the folder structure they're in.  ~/.bookmarks/linux/arch/bookmarks contains those related to arch, etc.  when i hit B in uzbl, the folder scructure is analized by find and an html page is built and opened.  /type out what i want and go.  adding a bookmark is done via zenity, the folder scructure is displayed and you can add the current url to any category (or create a new one).

plus, i serve up the dynamically created bookmark page so i can access it from any location/browser/OS.  works pretty well.  details are on my website if anyone's interested.

+1
I have most of my folders (and i do use subfolders) in the bookmark toolbar though, almost like drop down menus.
my setup:
[work] [personal] [media] [arch] etc..
under each folder are subfolders further subcategorizing each.

i recently went through my unsorted to clean them up, got rid of 100s of bookmarks/duplicates, i dont like to keep much in there.  I do have a "new" folder in the bookmark toolbar to handle the "unsorted" stuff though

I just started using delicious a few months ago.  It's very handy for being able to access my bookmarks from anywhere and I don't have to worry about backing them up.

I don't understand how anyone can leave their bookmarks unsorted. *looks at ataraxia* so I have 13 bookmarks in my bookmarks bar, 6 "bookmarks" in my frequently visited sites slots on my new tab page, and in 'Other Bookmarks' I have porn and programming links. Stuff I don't usually visit all the time.

Re: SUCKLESS BOOKMARKS? Part Ѻ1: How do you organize your bookmarks?

The way I see it there are basically 3 kinds of bookmarks. First there are the sites you visit all the time. You probably have these memorized, and you don't really need to bookmark them. What you need is a quick way to get to them, like opera's speed dial or vimperator's quickmarks. Next you have temporary links that you'll have no use for after you've read them once, like feeds or random articles. Finally you have reference sites that you don't visit often but need to remember for later. This is the only kind that really fits into the traditional bookmarking paradigm.

I use uzbl with 3 custom bookmark scripts. One emulates vimperator's quickmarks, another implements a temporary URL queue, and the last one uses surfraw's keyword bookmarks (currently working on a better way to browse/organize these - I might move away from surfraw completely if I don't come up with something).

Re: SUCKLESS BOOKMARKS? Part Ѻ1: How do you organize your bookmarks?

I'm using Midori so first of all I have the startpage with 9 different sites. Those can be very random and most are pages that other people (friends, family, fiance) visit.

Secondly I have (like many other it seems) a "Bookmarks Toolbar", that have the bookmarks organised in folders, and some (but very few) direct-links (email, my own website etc)
The folders are mainly: Forum, Bloggs, Art, Videos, Software, Guides, Mixed and Temporary. At the moment, I have no subfolders. But I'm planning of adding subfolders to "art",like webdesign, themes, wallpapers etc.

I don't use bookmarks at all anymore. I just use tab complete with vimperator with my recent history.
I know vimperator has bookmark functionality but I just don't see the point in using it.

Same here. This is, indeed, a nice thing to have.

With firefox, pressing the gold star next to the address puts it in the 'unsorted' folder. pressing star again lets you edit, and add tags.  add tags, and  you can open your bookmarks based on these tags, and then you can go wild with it smile

much too messy for my tastes though, but i love firefox having a lot of versatility

Re: SUCKLESS BOOKMARKS? Part Ѻ1: How do you organize your bookmarks?

For things that I would like to save because I'll probably forget about and will need in the near future (e.g. datasheets, etc.), I put them in various folders in the toolbar (which is the only thing I've unhidden in my Vimperator setup) based on what they're used for.  Otherwise, I visit other sites enough to simply remember them or get them from my history.  I use the QuickMarks feature of Vimperator a lot as well.  I really don't have that many bookmarks and the few that I do have usually get recycled quickly, so for me, it's not practical to create a really nice, elegant solution like some of you guys have.
