Did you try to disable kernel mode setting by adding nomodeset to the end of the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst?

Re: Inspiron 3200 neomagic NM2160 [MagicGraph 128XD] (rev 01) dead startx

Same problem here on an Thinkpad 600X (neomagic).
I temporarily downgraded xf86-video-neomagic (1.2.4-1), xorg-server (1.6.3.901-1) and xf86-input-evdev (2.2.5-1).

Found this line in the display manager log:
/usr/bin/X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/neomagic_drv.so: undefined symbol: xf86UDelay

Maybe it's this one?

Re: Inspiron 3200 neomagic NM2160 [MagicGraph 128XD] (rev 01) dead startx

Actually, the solution is to update with 'pacman -Syu' (if you want to update everything) or so I thought when I read here:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/17299?opened=6428&status[0]=
that the bug was fixed a couple of days before your last post.

So I tried it, and it didn't work.

Turns out that a couple of my mirrors had died or stopped syncing.  By trial and error, I removed the first couple of mirrors from my /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and it updated successfully.

I'm typing this while it's updating.  Hopefully it'll work - if not I'll be back! :-)

*sigh*

I updated, but still seem to have the same problem.

Think I might have to give up and install another distro.  Shame, I liked the idea of archlinux.

Re: Inspiron 3200 neomagic NM2160 [MagicGraph 128XD] (rev 01) dead startx

I have a Dell Latitude LS with a Neomagic NM256AV. Also uses the xf86-video-neomagic driver.

The issue is the same for me with a fresh install. But, I have a solution in my case.
My laptop has a VGA D-Sub port, on which I connect an external monitor. In my case my Dell 2007WFP TFT.
When that's hooked up I use the Fn key in combination with the one that makes the laptop switch display output, forgot which one it is and I dont have the little laptop within arms reach so check which button it is in your case if any. Switch to external only output.
I make sure I configured xorg.conf correctly and run startx.
I then have output on my external screen. It's not the correct resolution, because I set up xorg.conf for my laptop, but it works.
I then close X by closing all the xterm's that it spawned, and drop back to CLI mode (frame buffered in my case).
I switch the output mode back to internal LCD only and unplug my external monitor.
I run startx again, et voila, it now works on my laptop.

I think it has problems with polling some hardware for info and writing it to some file. But that is a wild guess.
All I know is that my neomagic outputs to my laptop LCD the way it's supposed to.
YMMV, but try it out anyway and also try different combinations.

Might be a good idea to mount your filesystem in a safe way so you dont keep losing data and/or risk corrupting it entirely. In case of ext4, at the very least mount it with the "nodelalloc" option, which disabled delayed allocation. Also think of using the "sync" option, works for other filesystems as well, which will make it skip the write buffer and write directly to disk.
Will reduce performance, but it's only until your problems are solved right? wink
