comming back, pidgin questions and where the ... is "archie"?

Hey, I'm seriously thinking of comming back. Its been about a year since my last install.
Going to try my hand at a virtual env later and see.

First question would be 3rd party sites for software or those scripted pkg makers.. Are there some sites I should bookmark right now
or is the majority of it kept in forum discussions?

Is the voice and video working in newest pidgin? (gtalk)

And where the HELL did "archie" go? The live arch cd that was in development. I reallly like having a live cd, or usb.
Are there any live arch project being worked on? Can they work on usb? - sites / links / keyboard are wanted
very curious

Thanks
Geo

I'm not entirely sure about what you're asking with your first question, but I think that pidgin can now handle some video chat if you compile it with the ABS. And most of the recent ISOs are full live CDs by default.

so the full install cds, not the net install, are full cds you can boot into a desktop enviroment and use? then chose to install

The ABS reference will help, i think I know what to do without too much hazzle. thanks

There is not desktop environment in the install CD.  Try the isos here if you want one:  http://godane.wordpress.com/

Re: comming back, pidgin questions and where the ... is "archie"?

makepkg is the official "scripted pkg maker" - definitely NOT 3rd party, as it is provided by the pacman package. I guess you're referring to yaourt and other such wrappers - details in the wiki.

Wiki also has details of various unofficial package repos.

pidgin from our repos has voice and video. this feature is working now only for xmpp.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: comming back, pidgin questions and where the ... is "archie"?

I did mean makepkg. While it is an easy (and great) way of making a package it isn't really in official packages.
But its good to see it still available. Probably won't need to use it much now, but good its here.

reguarding the live cd.. I haven't yet read through all the docs I need (getting back after a while and getting familiar with arch again)
are there "remastering" guides for the live cd? Because I have a old usb drive I was going to install "damn small" or "slax" but
if I could reduce the size I could add it and just be 100% arch again. (the size is 1gb BUT I need almost half for documents, my resume and some backups)

$ pacman -Qo /usr/bin/makepkg
/usr/bin/makepkg is owned by pacman 3.3.3-1

Am I the only one who snorted at '3rd party sites for software'? AFAIK most everyone who wants to provide software (or rather PKGBUILDs) for Arch uses the AUR, all you may want to add are alternative mirrors with non-standard repos. Which just install binaries which are in the AUR anyway.

it's a historical thing, ngoonee, Before the AUR existied, it was not uncommon for users to set up their own repos to share packages that were not provided by the Arch devs.

Re: comming back, pidgin questions and where the ... is "archie"?

back when I first tried it i can remember requesting pkgbuilds in forum here.
There were a few repo but I picked pkgbuild mostly.. and typically for recent software builds -
coincidentily one of the last posts of mine was about gaim just before was pidgin.. Flashback to 2006
