Re: dbus needed?

xorg needs hal
hal needs dbus

so, unless you remove xorg's dependency of hal, you will still need it

Re: dbus needed?

this is still very confusing to me.
the dbus wiki says you SHOULD NOT load dbus if you have hal.

the hal wiki says you SHOULD load dbus even if you have hal.

Re: dbus needed?

What the hal wiki says is:

The DBus and HAL daemons will now load at boot time. While HAL would load dbus automatically if it was not already running it would not unload it properly at shutdown. Therefore to avoid any complications it is best to load DBus before HAL through your daemons array.
NOTE: Some people have reported problems with this setup. If you also experience problems also you should try loading hal first followed by dbus.

From that it seems to be clear that hal requires dbus and that hal would load dbus automatically and that there is an option to load dbus manually.

Re: dbus needed?

According to the hal wiki there may be problems with dbus not being unloaded properly when it was previously loaded by hal itself. Thus it recommends loading dbus explicitely before hal.

On the other hand, I did never experience problems letting hal load dbus, thus this might be a rather rare circumstance. Usually it should be sufficient to only load hal.

If, however, you decide to explicitely load dbus prior to hal make sure not to background both of them. Otherwise hal may not detect dbus already running which might cause problems when it tries to load dbus twice. And hal by itself should never be backgrounded because it must have finished its setup tasks before others can use them.

To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

Re: dbus needed?

Hal wiki:

you should try loading hal first followed by dbus.

That sounds like bad advice. First you load hal, which *should* load dbus, then you're loading dbus again. If all has gone well so far, this will fail b/c dbus is already running.

Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.
