I installed the ttf-inconsolata package. The font works in Leafpad fine, but when I try to set dwm's font to it, it doesn't work. I tried opening up xfontsel and it was there, but no characters showed in the space where they normally would, and also the drop down menus left a mark when I closed them. What's going on?
Here's a screenshot:

Have you added /usr/share/fonts/local to your xorg.conf?

Yeah.

Inconsolata doesn't even get installed to .../fonts/local.
However, I just tried it here with the same result. Other TTF fonts display fine so I assume its an issue with the font itself.

does "fc-list | grep -i inconsolata" list the font for you?

My bad: it gets installed to /usr/share/fonts/TTF
Section "Files"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/local"
EndSection

Odd...I use inconsolata just fine with dwm (status bar -- with the xft patch, and urxvt). Just to be clear, when you say you're setting dwm's font to inconsolata, are you talking about the status bar, or terminal font or??? Because the dwm status bar won't work with Inconsolata unless you patch dwm for xft support. If you're just using it as a terminal font, that should be WM agnostic.
My configs here if they help at all. On my system, it's installed to /usr/share/fonts/TTF/ttf-inconsolata.otf And fc-list|grep -i inconsolata shows: Inconsolata:style=Medium. You could try reinstalling the font if you haven't already, maybe from a different mirror?
Ah yes, and I remember now -- xfontsel doesn't work with inconsolata. I don't know why, but it causes some funky behaviors with that program! So, you probably have the font installed correctly, and are just seeing that glitch.
Good luck!

Thanks! I just didn't have the xft patch for dwm.

Can you please tell what lines exactly are to be patched? Cause, although it seems quite logic what to replace - I don't wanna mess with dwm.c too much and die trying to get the patch working.

@muchzill4 - my configs are here if you want to have a look at my dwm files. You'll have to look at the original patch and find the changed lines, 'cause I have several patches all in the same diff file. Also, if you're worried about borking your dwm.c, just put the source files in a git repo and commit as you go, so you can restore if you 'bork' it up
Good luck!
