Hello all,
A few days ago I found something on the mailing list archive about this, but the replies to the post that mentioned the log lines that I'm seeing (below) didn't really say anything about them. Just wondering if any of you have seen/solved this. I had the KDE performance problem with xorg-server-1.7.1.901-1 so I didn't use that for more than a few minutes, but this crashing problem exists with both xorg-server-1.7.1-1 and xorg-server-1.7.1.901-2. Platform is x86_64, video card and drivers are nVidia as you can see below.
Thanks!

I turned off all KDE desktop enhancements and still have frequent crashes, although the log is now different:

Identical problem here on x86_64, nvidia and KDE. I have a very similar traceback in Xorg.0.log to the first one above. In addition, in errors.log there is the message:
Nov 18 09:57:11 study kdm[3031]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
Anyone sorted this one yet please?

try installing xorg-server-1.7.1.901-3 from http://adslgr64.tiven.org/archlinux/x86_64/
I also use x86_64, nvidia and kde.
the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I've started using nouveau, and I have not had any crashes. So, it's looking like the problem was the nvidia driver. In video card section of my xorg.conf, I have RenderAccel turned on (along with several other options), and I have not yet tried turning that off as the nouveau drivers are working pretty well for me. I'll try mess around with that and report back.

Alright, even with RenderAccel, and everything else, off, X crashed out after 30 minutes or so when using the nvidia driver. Back to nouveau, which is working well.

Well after a couple of days of on and off use, I haven't been dumped out of KDE after upgrading xorg-server as suggested above:
try installing xorg-server-1.7.1.901-3 from http://adslgr64.tiven.org/archlinux/x86_64/
Fingers crossed. So, two potential solutions for any other users experiencing this problem.

This has been fixed in xorg-server 1.7.1.902-1, so there's no reason to run 3rd party xorg packages now.
