xorg.conf problems

hi
I have a working X-desktop with awesomeWM.
problem is, my X only works without a xorg.conf, not with the Xorg -configure one or a minimalistic one.
I have an intel 4500mhd graphic device, installed xf86-video-intel and evdev input devices.
KMS, hal and dbus are all loaded and running.

I need a working .conf file to set new font paths and I want to enable my hdmi output with xrandr.

this is my xorg log file when I start X without a .conf:

This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the
latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository.

Re: xorg.conf problems

A long shot, but try 'X -configure :1' [ as root ! ]

You'll then be given instructions to test this xorg. If all is OK, simply copy
and rename it to /etc/X11/.

Re: xorg.conf problems

How exactly does the xorg.conf file not work, and is there any difference between the Xorg.log files with / without xorg.conf file?

Re: xorg.conf problems

the log file is slightly different, I was irritated because of the same file size.

I also tried a minimalistic .conf with only this. I found this in another thread on these forums, but it didn't work either.
this makes me think it has something to do with my intel driver. perhaps X is using the vesa driver when i'm loading it without .conf

Re: xorg.conf problems

I've never messed with an intel card, but having three video cards and three monitors has given me a little experiencing dealing with xorg.conf, so I'll give it a guess.

From looking at your logs, it looks like your VGA1 output latches onto your first monitor definition (Monitor0), and your LDVS1 output that you have something connected to doesn't have a Monitor section.  So, when Screen tries to initialize your card with the Monitor0 definition, it is trying to output to VGA1 (which has nothing connected it).  Of that's my guess anyway.  Try this maybe, or something like it..  Replace your entire monitor section with the following:

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "VGAmonitor"
    VendorName "VGA1"
    ModelName "VGA1"
    Option "dpms"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "LCDmonitor"
    VendorName "LVDS1"
    ModelName "LCDorSomethingDescriptive"
    Option "dpms"
EndSection

And further down in screen, change your Screen section to (I trimmed out all those non-24 Depth entries, but that shouldn't matter; the meat is the Monitor line change):

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "LCDMonitor"
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Maybe you'll at least get a different error or something this way?  Lol.

Re: xorg.conf problems

Oh, the two DPMS lines aren't important really.  I am just accustomed to having it in there.

Re: xorg.conf problems

thank you for your help. My notebook has external vga and external hdmi ports, but I have not plugged in anything there.

I added both Monitor sections to my xorg.conf . It still doesn't work.
I think it might be right that it has something to do with the Monitor settings, as there is no serious warning or error in the log.

here is my new log file:

Re: xorg.conf problems

Hmm.  Did you put both monitor sections I listed in the xorg.conf or just the LCDMonitor one?  Double check and make sure you have the proper formatting for the first Monitor section for a VGA monitor (even if you don't have a VGA monitor attached).

It appears to only be seeing the LCDMonitor enry and attaching it to VGA1.  It looked from your initial output like it was assigning on a first come, first serve basis, and VGA was eating your only monitor section even though LVDS1 is where you actually need to be displaying to.

From the log:

(II) intel(0): Output VGA1 using monitor section LCDMonitor
(II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 has no monitor section

What I was hoping is it would attach the VGA monitor line to VGA1, then the LCDMonitor line to LVDS1, then your Screen would initialize on LVDS1, which is what it looks like it should be doing.

Like I said though, I am doing a bit of guessing here.  Maybe it will at the least give you something to do until someone familiar with your card or more familiar with X than I comes along.

Re: xorg.conf problems

I think 'officially' if you want to prepare for messing with xrandr each connector should have its own short monitor section with associated identifier.  There may be a way to specify which goes with which device, but you can also just list them in the order X distributes them out.  The monitors X initializes with your setup are:

(II) intel(0): Output VGA1 using monitor section LCDMonitor
(II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 has no monitor section
(II) intel(0): found backlight control interface /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0
(II) intel(0): Output DVI1 has no monitor section
(II) intel(0): Output DP1 has no monitor section
(II) intel(0): Output DVI2 has no monitor section
(II) intel(0): Output DP2 has no monitor section
(II) intel(0): Output DP3 has no monitor section
(II) intel(0): Output TV1 has no monitor section

Having something associated with VGA1 (whatever it is) and LVDS1 (which is where you should be displaying) is the only important part right now though, as far as I know.  They can really use whatever identifier you want.  You just have to make sure the identifier associated with your second monitor entry is the one that you list in your Screen.  But I think the other associated monitors will matter later if you want to do xrandr tricks, but I know little about that (made it work once to see it work, but couldn't get it to work with multi-cards, so went about my day).

Someone is welcome to come along and correct me though; my experience is somewhat limited.

Re: xorg.conf problems

Interesting.  Try this for monitor and screen section and see if it is any better.  I read somewhere else that if the identifier matches the output, it will figure things out, but I can't test it right now.

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "LVDS1"
    VendorName "Something"
    ModelName "LaptopLCD"
    Option "dpms"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "LVDS1"
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Re: xorg.conf problems

And maybe change your device line to (with the last stated monitor line):

Section "Device"
    Identifier "GMA X4500MHD"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "Monitor-LVDS" "LVDS1"
EndSection

And if that doesn't work, trying replacing the LDVS1's with just LDVS or with LDVS-1.

That's all I got for now.  Hopefully one of these works out for you.  I'm going to head off to class.

You can see I am no X-pert, but I love problems like this that you can throw solutions at until one sticks without having to worry about breaking anything.  Heh.

now I have

(II) intel(0): Output VGA1 using monitor section LVDS1
(II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 using monitor section LVDS1

but I still have no X.

Re: xorg.conf problems

Strange.  They are both using the one monitor?  I would try making a separate monitor section called VGA1 for VGA1 to bind to (it looks like LDVS1 found it find based upon identifier name).  And make sure that in your Screen section you are using Monitor  "LDVS1" now (and not LCDmonitor or anything else).   Maybe that'll help?

Sorry I am guessing a bit here.  I know its frustrating to try things until one works sometimes, but it's the best I can do until a 'guru' comes along.

edit: I just tested the VGA out with no .conf and it works, even with the correct display ratio (4:3 rather than 16:9 on my book). Tomorrow I will perhaps test the hdmi port on a friends new TV. If all works, I honestly don't care about messing around with xorg.conf ..
The font path problem is only relevant to urxvt so I will stick with xterm where extra fonts work without problem.

Re: xorg.conf problems

Hmm..  The good news is that the current configuration seems to be making X do what I thought X should be doing, well, except for the whole "working" part.  The interesting lines that I saw that changed where:

(**) |-->Screen "Screen0" (0)
(**) |   |-->Monitor "LVDS1"
(**) |   |-->Device "Card0"

(II) intel(0): Output VGA1 using monitor section VGA1
(II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 using monitor section LVDS1

(II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 connected

(II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 using initial mode 1366x768

Which means that it apparently now thinks that your card is driving the screen that it should be driving, and recognizes that it is connected.  Its really a shame that didn't make anything work though, since that's what I was hoping we would see in the logs.

Oh, apprently that "Monitor-LVDS" option isn't being used and can safely be removed:

(WW) intel(0): Option "Monitor-LVDS" is not used

But that shouldn't fix anything.

Glad to hear that you might not need this fixed, because I think I have fixed everything I have a bit of experience messing with, and nothing else is jumping out at me personally as being wrong (except obviously that things don't work!).  I gotta go take a test now (Visual Basic!  Yick!  I wouldn't even review if I didn't have problems remember the "weird" particulars of the language that just don't match up with what I am used to).
