Well, you have to count on nvidia or Asus.
I own a M50VN with the same card; the last working nvidia driver is 180.60.
With more recent versions my X experience is like yours.
It seems that Vista is also affected (never tried, I stick with the manufacturer drivers).
The problem lies in the powermizer; see http://tutanhamon.com.ua/technovodstvo/ … IX-driver/; this page explains very well how to tune it.
Disabling powermizer with:
Option "RegistryDwords" "PerfLevelSrc=0x2222"
fixes the issue, but the GPU works at full clock frequency.
In the next hours I'll be forced to do more testing because I don't kwow if 180.60 works with the new Xorg.

Well, I downloaded and installed version 212 BIOS. No more flickering. No more need to setup RegistryDwords!
Previously the update wasn't offered in the official download page for the M50VN.
Description: BIOS 212 - Update VBIOS to fix VGA flicker and freeze problem.
File Size: 753.97 (KBytes)
2009/11/17 update
