[SOLVED] can't get printer to install........

Hi archers

I have a HP Deskjet f2280 all in one printer/scanner...........
now.... I KNOW that it works... because I have used it in ubuntu, opensuse, mandriva etc.... but I can't get it to work in Arch

ok... so far, I have made sure that cups and HPLIP is installed, i've unplugged and replugged in several times... i've the HP management application to detect a new
printer, but it won't detect it.....

also, this is the output of lsusb

Bus 002 Device 007: ID 046d:c222 Logitech, Inc. G15 Keyboard / LCD
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 046d:c221 Logitech, Inc. G15 Keyboard / Keyboard
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 046d:c049 Logitech, Inc. G5 Laser Mouse
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0556:0001 Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co., Ltd AK5370 I/F A/D Converter
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:c223 Logitech, Inc. G15 Keyboard / USB Hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Although.... when I do "lsusb" when im logged in as root... it shows this........

Bus 002 Device 012: ID 03f0:2404 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 002 Device 007: ID 046d:c222 Logitech, Inc. G15 Keyboard / LCD
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 046d:c221 Logitech, Inc. G15 Keyboard / Keyboard
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 046d:c049 Logitech, Inc. G5 Laser Mouse
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0556:0001 Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co., Ltd AK5370 I/F A/D Converter
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:c223 Logitech, Inc. G15 Keyboard / USB Hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

note.... "hewlett-packard"
it is detected as root, but not as normal user.... could this be why I cannot use my printer so far? because it may be assigned to root user?
if so... how do I fix that?

any help appreciated
kaddy

Could you try http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUP … CUPS_1.4.x if you haven't and post again what you get?

Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

Re: [SOLVED] can't get printer to install........

hmmmmmmmmmmm. I had trouble with my printer the next day....... so just to clarify what I done after that just incase somebody
else has the same trouble....

ok.... my printer was printing blank pages...... that was 1 issue.....
also, I noticed I hp-setup would not detect my printer when trying to add it.... but i was able to add it using the cups web interface.... and print a couple of test pages from within cups, and from system settings/printer.......... but then it stuffed up again... so clearly it wasn't installed correctly....

How I fixed it
removed hplip and reinstalled it. reboot, unplug/replug in printer...........
made sure cups was installed

The reason i couldn't detect my printer with hp-setup is because my username was not in the "lp" group.... you can check /etc/group with your fav text editor... the lp group only had "daemon" next to it... so

sudo gpasswd -a "username" lp

logout/login

now hp-setup will detect the printer, although it complained while installing it, something about a cups error/restart cups.... I tried that, but it still kept happening....

I then went into the cups interface, and added my printer to that, and opened the PPd file that matched my printer in /usr/share/ppd/HP

it installed fine..... then for some reason, i went back into hp-setuup, tried to add my printer again... and it WORKED!

now I can print anything perfectly, use my scanner etc etc..... and  the hp device manager lists all the features, and theres no red cross next to my printer. haha!

Dunno if it was a fluke or not... But this is exactly what I did to fix my problem........

hope it helps somebody else, as I found alot of posts about this issue to be a mixed bag.
cheers
