[Solved] Kernel panic with 8GB of RAM after upgrade

This is probably an upstream bug, but I haven't identified which package is causing the issue.

I upgraded my x86_64 system yesterday, but now I get a kernel panic:

EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with writeback data mode.
kinit: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
INIT: version 2.86 booting

Searching on google for a solution, one suggestion[1] (from 2007 / 2.6.23!!!) was to try to boot with a mem=4G parameter, since the issue could be triggered by "too much memory".
Indeed, booting with a mem=4G parameter makes the system boot without the kernel panic.

Funny thing is, when I downgrade to my old kernel (which I used before the upgrade), I still get the error...when going through the list of upgraded packages, I'm not able to identify which other package could be causing the issue. Any ideas?

Re: [Solved] Kernel panic with 8GB of RAM after upgrade

Perhaps it is caused by the limits applied to windows memory in the case you are using windows dual boot.

Re: [Solved] Kernel panic with 8GB of RAM after upgrade

Have you tried to boot it with mem=8G?

My laptop needs the kernel option mem=4096m (as i have 4GB phys. memory) and current kernels just don't boot without it. The startup stops at the same position as your boot, but without the error message just a instant reboot. On my side i guess it's ACPI related, on yours i'm not sure.

If mem=8G works for you, i would just live with it.

Re: [Solved] Kernel panic with 8GB of RAM after upgrade

I am running with the latest updates using 12G of RAM..  Here's the packages you have upgraded that I do not have installed:

  1 bluez
  5 libgl
  6 twisted

I believe I am running everything else in your list of things upgraded.  I checked all the libraries for the same name/version and anything else in the list that I didn't recognize and know was installed.

Maybe look at those first?  bluez and twisted seem less likely than libgl.  Maybe its the interplay of something else than just the new packages alone...

Check your memory for errors. If you added broken memory to your system, your system will behave weird.

Yep, I did that earlier with memtest86+ v4.0, no errors found in 2 passes hmm

Hello.

You have an Intel CPU and your system is ran under out of IOMMU space for 32 bit DMA transfers (on Intel is emulated via software). You can increse this value (default to 64MB) under kernel command line: swiotlb=65536 (for 128MB) and swiotlb=131072 (256MB) etc

Success! big_smile Thanks a lot...

I actually tried that option yesterday, but I think I got it wrong with =128 instead of =65535 or =128M

Changing topic to solved.
