fresh install trouble [SOLVED]

just finished installing arch on my old desktop(pentiumIII).  install went fine, but on first boot instead of a login prompt i got a blank screen.  i thought ok, weird, so i gave it the three finger salute and this time instead of a blank screen i got green and yellow stripes like my video card is on the fritz.  tried switching terminals, alt-f1, alt-f2 etc but same screen. tried logging in blind as root but still same screen.  any ideas?

Re: fresh install trouble [SOLVED]

Does it get past the GRUB menu and show boot progress?

Re: fresh install trouble [SOLVED]

yes.

the problem occurs after grub, and after the boot progress notices.

it is when i should be seeing a terminal login screen that i have this problem.

Using ATi or Intel video card? Might be KMS goofing up. See the wiki.

i read the linked to wiki and after wanted to check the installed xorg.conf but my install contains no /etc/X11.

Re: fresh install trouble [SOLVED]

It may be worth adding nomodeset to your kernel line. This would disable kernel mode setting. Kernel mode setting kicks in before X starts, so it can hit you even if you didn't install X.

Re: fresh install trouble [SOLVED]

that was it.  appending "nomodeset" to the kernel line in menu.lst solved the problem.  thx for all the help.

It does not matter if you have X installed or not...as you have found out, if your framebuffer is distorted, it could be KMS goofing up.
