I have absolutely no audio in wine on my second computer. On running winecfg I get this:
fixme:mixer:ALSA_MixerInit No master control found on HDA ATI HDMI, disabling mixer
I have an HDMI out on this computer, so I guess this is leading to some kind of a conflict. My sound works perfectly fine with Alsa.
My asound.state looks like this:

Are you using an up to date ATI driver?

I am using the the latest catalyst driver. I am not using ATI hdmi for sound at all though. I also get this error while booting up :
All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/sound, it will be ignored in a future release.

So you are using the on-board hdmi?

No, I don't use the HDMI at all. I use the onboard IDT sound card. My sound works otherwise, it is just with wine that I get the "audio test failed" message.
Offline
I just disabled my HDMI device from modprobe.d/framebuffer_blacklist.conf, but still , same error.
I forgot to mention, I get this additional error when I select the audio tab in winecfg :
err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"wineesd.drv": libesd.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

Do you have any other "sound" issues anywhere else on your system. like pidgin, skype, music players, or audacity?

I just installed lib32-esound from AUR and got rid of the libesd.so.O error. The ATMI error still persists.
No, I don't have any other sound issues. At least not on Amarok, VLC or Youtube

By default Wine's ALSA driver support only one device. You need to explicitly tell it to search for more devices (or configure them manually).
here is a link about the RegKeys: http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys
So im thinking that your just not going to be able to use HDMI via wine. i dont' now if its going to cause other issues. Also, I dont' know much about actually telling wine where to look for those controls as well.

Just saw the link, and tried doing it myself. This sounds too clumsy. Thanks anyways.

I just figured that I get the "fixme:mixer:ALSA_MixerInit No master control found on HDA ATI HDMI, disabling mixer" error only when I select "alsa" in winecfg. This has got to do something with the way my alsa is setup.

I think I have the same error. Sound works fine in vlc, aplay, youtube etc. up until the first time I try winecfg (or wine). The I have to log out of KDE and back in again for it to work in _other_ apps again.

All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/sound, it will be ignored in a future release.
So fix it:
mv /etc/modprobe.d/sound /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
