Recent update has broken sound on my machine (Realtek ALC888). Never had problems before, it always "just worked". Drivers appear to be loaded, ALSA recognises it. When I try to play a playlist in XMMS, it skips through all the files without attempting to play them but doesn't report any errors. Sound in other programs is silent, all volumes are up and unmuted in alsamixer.

Maybe your audio codecs got messed up, try reinstall gstreamer, xine or whatever you use
Windows works in 80 % cases, Linux in 20%, but you can make linux work in other 80% cases whilst you can never make windows work in last 20%

I don't think that's the problem. It affected all applications (Firefox, Flash, XMMS, Audacious, Quod Libet, VLC, etc.)

make sure your user is in the 'audio' group. "gpasswd -a username audio"
This happened to me a week or two ago and that fixed it.

I was already in the audio group, by I readded and logged in again to make sure. No luck. Root cannot play audio either, so it's not a permissions problem.

It's a kernel problem. I downgraded from 2.6.31.6 to 2.6.31.5 and I have sound back. XMMS seems to have a different problem, but all the other apps play audio.
