1) Get a box, any box that you want, as long as it is the right size for what you want (ATX, mATX microATX, etc). Three sides is the best.
Would you know of any type of mini-box that would be resistant towards heat or is that what the aluminum is for? Would you also recommend the Mini-ITX motherboards for this type of projecct?

Sorry, didn't realize you posted back.
Mini-itx is awesome. Get one of the zotac 630i itx wifi boards. Built in wifi, good graphics, cheap, works with linux. All you need is the ram, psu, hdd and cpu. All metals are resistant towards heat, or at least as much as you could put out with a computer. Aluminum is awesome, but is is costly due to manfacturing costs and all. Steel is cheap, but it is hard to work with.
For a minibox, I used a bread box. Really get creative here. Scour ebay and craigslist. Be open minded. Be prepared to cut, mod, hammer, etc.

very nice.
did you build the rack and why don't you turn the board so the cables are on the backside? i think this would look better.

Drive racks were built custom ya .. <3 my dremel
Reason the board was mounted this way is that the back panel of the mobo / vid card / etc... aligns with where the rear panel is going to be.
