Hi guys, I got a 3rd generation ipod, that stupid one without buttons on it. It's actually becoming like The Onion's "Apple Wheel" (http://www.theonion.com/content/video/a … olutionary)...
Anyway, I used gtkpod to upload songs to it. I made my playlists, saved the changes, unmounted safely, etc...it was all fine and dandy, until I plugged my headphones in and all it says is "Please use iTunes to upload music to this ipod".
What can I do? I'm really pissed at Apple for this crap and don't plan to buy from them again, but in the meantime is there any workaround? I can double click on the icon on my desktop, and I've found where my songs are stored, and I can play them directly off there...So they're definitely there, but there is apparently some kind of lock or something on it...any ideas?
Thanks!
EDIT: Wow I'm an idiot. 3rd generation IPOD SHUFFLE is what I should've said. Wow.

Declan, you put Rockbox into it. Besides making it way cooler, it works the way these things are supposed to, just copy files to the Ipod and when you turn it on it will add them to the music database, and it has lots of plugins and useful programs.
Check it out - http://www.rockbox.org/

Hmmm. A few questions:
Would this void the warranty?
Also, this one is a little different I think...would it be able to have playlists and such?
Would this be a permanent change?

Wait, from the front page:
Stable ports
Rockbox runs well on these players, has a complete manual and is supported by the installer:
* Apple: 1st through 5.5th generation iPod, iPod Mini and 1st generation iPod Nano
(not the Shuffle, 2nd/3rd/4th gen Nano, Classic or Touch)

You can always get it back to factory settings using iTunes.
Edit: I think it does void the warranty, you can always buy this T-shirt http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts-appare … eric/8f52/

If you jailbreak it, you can use gtkpod

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Jailbreak is not for the 3rd Generation Ipods.
Declan: Yes, It does everything and more things than the regular Ipod Firmware does.
Example: Play Doom on it, Battery Benchmarks, It's Themeable, and lots of stuff also.

Yeah, I'm stupid. Look at my edit in the OP. It's a shuffle, which the rockbox site says rockbox can't do.

Jailbreak is only for iPod Touch and iPhone. Not regular iPods or Shuffles.

Unless there's a way for Apple to find out after you reflash the original firmware (if that's still possible after you wrecked it ), I wouldn't worry about it. Of course, if it does violate Apple's terms and they can find out...

Ok, that's good. But any advice on what I can do?

Anyone have any idea what I can do?
The only thing I can think of at this point is to use virtualbox and put itunes on it, but that's really annoying and I don't want to have to.

you could try this, from what I saw, it's a console based ipod suffle manager. seems pretty easey, so dont be afraid.

Thanks, but I installed itunes on a virtual machine, and it works fine. It pisses me off that Apple does this, and I won't be buying from them again. I hope steve jobs dies in a fire.
Thanks anyway!

When you loose all love for that device (or when the warranty expires) just jailbreak it or whatever is needed and get rid of all the drm and restrictions and be happy that the nonsense is over
