cd drive

i just put in a cd.  how can i get to those files on the cd?
is it a similar process to mounting a usb?

If its a CD-R(W) and you have a CD/DVD burner, then you just need a burning program like Brasero or Xfburn to burn the files onto the cd.

What's your setup please, DE etc.  If you just want to read the files on the cd it should be straightforward.
