Making the leap

Hello world!

I've been using Xubuntu for quite a while now and it has served me well. However, I recently upgraded from the 'Hardy Heron' ditribution to the 'Karmic Koala' distribution. Ever since, my laptop has been painfully slow! I happened across Archlinux, and from what I've read it's perfect for me. All I want is an office suit, vlc media player, and a web browser. But I am far from considering myself a 'competent' linux user. From what I can gather, Archlinux can either have a CLI, or a GUI. Do I need to be a fluent programmer to install Archlinux and shape it to my needs? Please advise! (Screenshots would be conducive to my understanding)

Re: Making the leap

No need for programming skills to install wink.

If you want screenshots, imagine the slackware installer. Arch's looks alike. Also, be sure to check out the beginner's guide and installation guide on the wiki - read up and if you have any questions after that, check in again.

Re: Making the leap

You don't need to be a programmer at all to successfully install and configure Arch.  The only thing you'll is the Beginners' Guide and a little bit patience to start off with.

Re: Making the leap

You could start by reading the Beginner's Guide. If it makes some sense to you, and you are prepared to follow it carefully, the you will be able to install Arch...

The rest of the documentation on the Wiki is of a similarly high standard. You don't need to a programmer to run Arch; you do need to do your homework though. It's a great learning curve.

Re: Making the leap

A good idea might be to print out the beginner's guide or have it accessible on another computer while you do the install.

Re: Making the leap

This site has a walkthrough of the installation process with screenshots for every step: http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-I … 9239.shtml

Installing arch and then installing the x-server is a lot easier than it sounds like. You could even practice doing it in a virtual machine, just to get familiar with how the whole process would work.

Re: Making the leap

If you want a lightweight desktop, and are only using an office suite, web browser... you might want to look at LXDE too.  Great lightweight desktop even lighter than XFCE.  There's a wiki for that too.
