has anyone tried to follow the steps outlined at this link recently?:

can you verify that the procedure works? I need to upgrade my laptop (Lenovo T61) to the 64-bit kernel, just wanted to know if I might expect a lot of trouble or not...

I never read that page, so I can't offer an opinion, but when I changed from 32 to 64, I just backed up necessary data, wiped the 32-bit install, installed 64-bit, and restored data. Much cleaner IMO.

Back when I went with 64-bit, I did the same as tomk and highly recommend that method. It's just cleaner and better in my opinion.

Back up your configuration files, save your data, and do a clean install. 'Upgrading' from an existing installation is just asking for problems.

Yes but still possible, I have upgraded an usb disk from 32bit to 64bit and it kept working just fine. Maybe I was lucky or followed some good tips

If you want to backup your configurations and reinstall, there's a wiki page for that.

Looking at the wiki guide it should work. It is how I would attempt this, but I have never been known for keeping things in working order.
