As you can see, there are no (EE) errors in the logfile. This makes it very difficult to debug. I'm running the most up-to-date system (kernel 2.6.30-ARCH) at the moment. This seemed to happen out of nowhere. I had it working a long time before, which leads me to believe I may be missing a required setting in a new package or something. Any ideas?

Thanks, Joe

Re: Cannot Start X on Asus EeePC 900

Try to make sure it is not a package problem (it could be that Xorg package is corrupted).

Try to execute it without any xorg.conf (as root):

# mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

afterwards, if it works, then revise deeper your xorg.conf.

Re: Cannot Start X on Asus EeePC 900

similar problem, eeepc 901, Xorg 1.7.1.901
http://dpaste.com/120852/

Will post if I can resolve the problem.

EDIT: Interestingly, I was able to start slim before I re-installed (due to hard reset and SDD corruption). Maybe, as suggested above, the problem is a corrupted Xorg?

EDIT (2): Xorg now started, sans mouse & keyboard sad
- Forced re-install of xf86-video-intel, xf86-video-vesa
- installed xf86-input-synaptics
- ran X -configure for the 8th time and just copied xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf without even testing it

Don't think I did anything else. Don't see why this all would help. Also, X without mouse & keyboard is problematic, esp. on ext2.

Re: Cannot Start X on Asus EeePC 900

I have recently loaded Arch onto a 901.  I am having similar problems with not getting either a working mouse or the touchpad.

I get a black screen with conky running but no mouse and no twm or lxde.

I have tried the above xorg.conf but get "Failed to load module" for both mouse and kbd.

Both mouse_dev.so and kbd_dev.so do not exist in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/.

If I try running X without a xorg.conf the two files are created but with zero size.

I have tried adding .fdi files etc but without any luck.  It looks as if when you install from scratch rather than updating from an earlier install you end up with missing files (e.g mouse_drv.so and kbd_drv.so).

Has anyone else tried getting X running from a fresh net-install ?

Earlier I installed Arch 64 onto an Asus F6A without incident.  Both mouse_drv.so and kbd_drv.so exist.  X runs without a xorg.conf file etc.

Re: Cannot Start X on Asus EeePC 900

Because the new Xorg is slightly ridiculous and HAL based, you'll need to add Option "AllowEmptyInput" as false so it can use mouse/kbd drivers. (See: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2008/11/30 … ptyinput/) You could also switch over to evdev drivers, which won't be thrown away by X.

Re: Cannot Start X on Asus EeePC 900

Tried that.  I am guessing that mouse_drv.so and kbd_drv.so need to exist.

I am new to the forum and am guessing that if I load earlier versions of xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-kbd then upgrade, the above two files will mysteriously appear.  Will give it a go.

Re: Cannot Start X on Asus EeePC 900

My eeePC 900 has been running very well without an xorg.conf.

Re: Cannot Start X on Asus EeePC 900

I think grey was on the right track, check you .xinitrc.  It might be as simple as you had backgrounded everything so the x session immediately quits.  The last item in your .xinitrc should not be backgrounded. If you are using OpenBox for example it might look like this.

conky &
pypanel &
exec openbox-session

Same with rsambuca, my eeepc runs fine with no xorg.conf, give it a try.

Re: Cannot Start X on Asus EeePC 900

Installed today on eeepc 900 and encountered the mouse and keyboard not responding once X is started.  I am using LXDE, which started up and ran, just no kbd or mouse.

Here are the things I did that got it working.  I'm not sure that all of the steps are required.

X -configure
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add this line to ServerLayout section:

Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false"

Also

pacman -S xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard xf86-input-synaptics

Synaptics almost certainly isn't necessary since I didn't load it in xorg.conf, and I also removed the package and its still working.  I think the keyboard and mouse drivers and the "AllowEmptyInput" are the critical ones.
