unibrow: a unicode char browser that sits in the tray

http://xyne.archlinux.ca/info/unibrow

unibrow_small.png

I got sick of looking up unicode characters online so I created this. I'm sure that there's probably something similar blah blah blah, but this is lightweight and simple. Check the info on the info page above and let me know if it does anything it shouldn't.

There's a little voice in my head that tells me that I should be able to plug this into medit, but I don't know how. It wouldn't be too difficult to pass text back and forth between the two, but ideally I would want to insert characters directly into an medit buffer. Feel free to share any ideas about this if you have some.

The logo was inspired by Frank Jonen's Unicode Encoded logos but the more I look at it, the more I think I've seen it somewhere. Have I subconsciously copied another logo?

You may be subconsciously recognizing the uTorrent logo, but then there aren't too many similarities so it might be something else.

That is a cool app smile

Re: unibrow: a unicode char browser that sits in the tray

I don't think it's the uTorrent logo mostly due to the colors. It might all just be in my head but I can't shake the feeling of familiarity.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback. I've renamed the app "unibrow" because it's really more a browser than a selector, plus that name is far funnier imo. It also means that I can use a likeness of Frida Kahlo as a logo if it turns out that the current one actually is too similar to something else. tongue

Woot! No more going to Wikipedia to copy/paste the characters I need =P

Thank you for this.

P.S. The logo reminds me of this: http://omploader.org/vMXhmZw/ut3_logo.gif

Great app! And fantastic name!

Wishlist item: it would be nice if "unibrow" also displayed and/or
filtered by unicode name.

What do you mean by "unicode name"? Can you give me an example of how such a filter would work?

Re: unibrow: a unicode char browser that sits in the tray

Posting in contribution threads for different projects doesn't count as "necrobumping", so it's ok.

I honestly can't see the utility of adding tags to individual characters. Perhaps I could add a "Latin Letters with Accents" range though, but those are right below "Basic Latin" so it seems a bit pointless to me. If you want to jump directly to a given range, you can just pass it the character code on the command line.

By making the descriptions searchable, one could just find a symbol by typing his name.

Ok, I've added group and character name indices. Each can be searched with ctrl-f and filtered with regular expressions.

The names and ranges are downloaded from http://unicode.org/charts/charindex.html

Re: unibrow: a unicode char browser that sits in the tray

I've changed the configuration file format to include custom group and character names in the treeview indices, with support for nested hierarchies.
