pacman-color - do I need to configure it to colour the output?

I've installed it, but my pacman output is still uncoloured... Is there something else I need to do? The wiki makes it sound as if all I need to do is install it...

you sure you're running pacman-color -S <pkg> and not just pacman -S? tongue

I would put an alias in your ~/.bashrc so you don't have to type it out, too
