Alas, neither Google nor the wiki helped me so I turn to you, Archers far more knowledgeable about these things than I
KMS works perfectly if I leave the initscripts to load the modules, but I wanted a 1280x800 framebuffer from boot, so I added 'radeon' to the modules array in my mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilt the kernel image. Rebooted, the system hung for a while at the starting initramfs stage, and gave this error before continuing with no KMS:
Failed to load firmware "radeon/RV630_pfp.bin"
(Or something like that, the filename is definitelty correct, though)
So, I added /lib/firmware/radeon/RV630_pfp.bin (and RV630_me.bin for good measure) to the files array in mkinitcpio.conf, rebuilt the initramfs, rebooted, but no joy—same error. So, it's missing something it can't get at until later in the boot process, I just don't know what.
Any suggestions?

Please try radeon-initrd package from aur. Loading radeon-initrd firmware requires special hook. There was an update of mkinitcpio-tools maybe it fixes this issue.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.
