No, KMS is enabled.

here it works too... 2800 fps glxgears (hd4850)

Ok, with compiz disabled i also get 3k fps.

This is working fine with:

Kernel 2.6.32 from [testing]
mesa-split from here
Remaining git packages from AUR
xf86-video-ati-git
radeon-initrd for early start

For those who don't want or can't compile, I've uploaded to Mediafire a bunch of packages. Edit: i686 only

PS: I get about 1200 FPS in glxgears. I used to get >3000 in Catalyst. But it's ok. As long UrbanTerror works with a decent amount of FPS I'm happy

When i look at the  git logs i think we can also use libdrm from testing.

I have a Dell Studio 1537 with a Mobility Radeon HD3450 (M82 code), and I'm not ready to use experimental packages because I use the laptop for study, but I wanna know if somebody with the same chipset could explain his impressions with opensource-git drivers. That's because with the current video-ati and video-radeonhd my gpu temperature is too high and the fan is on all the time, consuming the battery so I must use the fglrx driver, but I'm really tired of ATI's behaviour with Linux.

Don't be mad at ATI -- they aren't even a company anymore!

Instead celebrate the fact that every day or so new code is contributed by AMD (the sometimes so-called "enemy") in order to make a driver that no one on earth who can compile x.org should be too obstructed from running.

As you say, fglrx is no good. What is AMD's response?

Contribute to the public good by working hard at improving their compilable drivers.
Sure, the pacing may feel slow. But couldn't you consider the fact that OpenBeOS just hit Alpha, and consider yourself perhaps lucky at the pace of things?

Not to say you are making a bad decision in any way by working with what's available to conserve battery length. I just wish there was less trash talk on AMD of all companies in the Linux forums. Though they could afford to be less aloof in our market: considering the fact that Linux works on a budget, it would be nice if they were (even) more proactive in producing quality, compilable code. We could exist to support each other :)

[Note: I can't help but notice that the license for xf86-video-ati (in the AUR git form) has not changed since 2004:

Maybe because I'm not english I did not well explain myself. I'm not mad of ATI (or AMD if you like ), I'm just tired of "crossing fingers" when there is an update of kernel or Xorg, because of black screens at reboot. I'm just trying to find a better option, that's all.

WORKS AWESOME.. I just recompiled all my git bits and BAM!!
I've got a HD4530 (I think)
I get 2000fps in glxgears, some minor glitching but not in Quake Live or Compiz (which feels WAY faster)
ALSO scrolling in Firefox and a few other places was slow.. now its not.. ITS AWESOME

SO HAPPY.... Might try IRQ next

Thanks a lot. I tried and you are right, the performance is awesome, even with Compiz I have 1500 fps in glxgears, and watching HD videos is perfect! The only problem I have is the temperature that I mentioned before. I don't know why, but with the open source drivers, in /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/ the gpu gives a 70º temp and the fan is always on. I'll look for a solution because the OpenS drivers are fantastic now.

I have read in some specialized sites (in ATI and linux) that opensource drivers still don't have power managment (PowerPlay as we said in Catalyst). So your GPU is always set for maximum performance, which heats a lot more, of course.

I found out my custom kernel can't load the radeon driver. Here is the error in dmesg:

radeon: Unknown symbol ttm_tt_set_placement_caching

This is weird since ttm_tt_set_placement_caching is a export symbol.

Here is the original git patch for when it was added to kernel:

I'm reversing the patch to see if i can get 3d back. I will report back if it works or not.

EDIT: I got radeon to load now with patch. But here is the error i got:

edit2: I CAN PLAY WARCRAFT3 IN WINE WITH VERY GOOD FPS!
I have a Radeon HD 4650.
I had to rebuild the package "clutter" with no mesa dep because it depends on some stupid version string in mesa.
Then I did:

pacman -S nightly/libdrm-git nightly/mesa-git nightly/libgl-git nightly/ati-dri-git nightly/xf86-video-ati-git

Then I completely removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Then I rebooted and - WOW.

Hey everyone.  I was trying to find if anyone has the same mobo/vid card combo I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813157153.  It's a Radeon 3000 onboard. 

Now this ATI chipset is interesting because it claims it can be hybrid in SLI mode with a regular PCI-E card, but by itself it's already pushing 256mb vid memory.  Furthermore, when in hybrid SLI mode, the integrated chip supposedly supports HD if the PCI-E card is capable of it.  So....

I can't seem to figure out if this integrated chip is capable of HD on it's own or not.  Which leads me to the question of which driver to use on this mobo.. suggestions??

**EDIT**
Found the asrock site, specifically my board.  Still unsure as to whether or not it support HD out of the box... just says that it can support it (assuming if there is another card in place).

Can you provide lib32 packages as well for mesa-git, libgl-git etc? It would be very helpfull, by the way I got 2000FPS first time from years on Linux !

Actually Kernel Modesetting does work quite good with late start and then 3D in general works good too, but Warcraft3 in Wine won't start with KMS enabled (dri2 buggy?)
Without KMS it works.

Just a note, the xf86-video-ati package from testing seems to work fine (ie. no need for -git version) for me.  So all it seems that's needed now which isn't in testing are the -git versions of the mesa packages (or if you'd rather build v7.7rc2, that works too).
