Can't connect to DHCP during install : using DWA-552

This is type of desktop adapter I am using: DWA-552 (D-Link)

I am trying to install Arch on my desktop. However I get this message when I am trying to connect to DHCP (in Setup Network): "Failed to run dhcpcd. See /dev/tty7 for details".

Can someone help me? Do I get error because of DWA-552? What can I do to fix it?

Re: Can't connect to DHCP during install : using DWA-552

You're attempting a netinstall?  If so, is there anyway you could do a wired connection?  There's a possibility that udev is not sure what driver is best for that adapter... had a similar issue with a netgear usb wireless adapter a few months back.  I had to do a wired connection, follow the wiki on install from a different system and grab ndiswrapper once I had a base Arch install in place...

I don't know who Kernel Debugger is, but Microsoft can keep him.

AFAIK ndiswrapper is part of the base install.

Re: Can't connect to DHCP during install : using DWA-552

I tried to install 64-bit version of netinstall. I am not sure if this can give a problem?

No. this wasn't the reason. 32-bit version of netinstall do the same thing.

Is there way to manually load Ndiswrapper? I know this card worked by ndiswrapper on other distros.

Instead of trying to do a net install, you could do a live cd install and then once ndiswrapper is installed (it is either part of base or base-devel, i forget) update via pacman -Syu

If ndiswrapper is indeed part of the base install, there is a guide to using it here:

Re: Can't connect to DHCP during install : using DWA-552

Thank you for all your input.

I just installed basesystem using cd version install (64-bit).
I also selected ndiswrapper from packages when I was selecting them. But now, it seems like ndiswrapper doesn't exist or just not working.
Well, it might exist, since when I type ndiswrapper, it tells me how to use it.

Also, Alexandrite. I looked at that link. However when I to go ndiswrapper folder "/etc/ndiswrapper", it is not there. Or it will be created only after I load a driver?

By the way. What about madwifi? I heard it can get my wireless card to work.

I think ndiswrapper will create any necessary directories when you install the driver.

I will try to install newer driver later today (I think older one didn't work on 64bit).

How can I install madwifi? only with pacman?

Re: Can't connect to DHCP during install : using DWA-552

You card *SHOULD* work with the ath9k module as far as I know. However I have the DWA-556 which is the PCI-Express version and I can't get it going with kernel .31, i'm hoping .32 will sort it out. It doesn't really help you with trying to install the net image but once your finished you should be able to use open source drivers.

If you can I would reccomend holding off on using ndiswrapper, or mad-wifi and use a wired connection until the next kernel makes it's way through testing. Failing that if you can manage to get a wired-connection for a just a couple of hours you could try building compat-wireless to get the latest ath9k from the AUR but i've failed at building that multiple times.

Good luck!
Jack.

EDIT: My card manages to aquire an IP address from DHCP but it won't send and recieve any other data packets, so it could be a slightly different problem to what your experiencing. It does take AGES to get that DHCP assigned though.

Re: Can't connect to DHCP during install : using DWA-552

I will try to wait for next kernel.. But here is what I get when I type iwconfig:

eth0 no wireless extensions

wmaster0 no wireless extensions

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:""
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=0
Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid music:0 Missed beacon:0

Does it tells anything (useful)?

I was also reading this on wiki about ath9k:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup

ath9k has been part of the kernel as of 2.6.27. But it has undergone some heavy development, and the changes have not propagated to the mainline kernel tree yet. The best solution would be to use the compat-wireless package for now. A mailing list exists for support and development related discussions.

Have anyone used that "compat-wireless"? http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download

Re: Can't connect to DHCP during install : using DWA-552

I connected my PC (where I try to install Arch-linux) by crossover cable to my laptop (where I have wireless connection working from my router.

How can I make my PC use my laptop's connection?
