not to mention once you download it, it's a giant confusing tarbomb of crap.
no clear instructions on building.
also it's always behind chromium builds.Word. I've also thought about trying out Iron, but then... rapidshare links? WTF? In the age of google code, sourceforge etc? That is just like saying: Yes, we develop opensource software, but we make it hard to reach (and therefore maintain) the code, because we do some bad things with it we do not want anyone to know.
What put me off about Iron was visiting the forums with javascript enabled and having a huge ad travel across the screen. For a group that's 'developing a browser that's setting the right standards' - this was complete hypocrisy..
With regards to Chrome/Chromium and privacy, what is it people don't like?
From what I've seen, most of the 'worrisome' features can be turned off anyhow. Clearing standard and Flash-based cookies should be part of everyones modus these days.

I don't agree at all with this. I do care about privacy and I wonder whether chromium also has googles tracking "features".
While "I don't care if Google tracks me" isn't quite the right idea, for me it's more like "Google was already tracking me anyway". I use Gmail, Google Reader, Google Docs, Google Maps, and several kinds of Google searches. I doubt that using Chrome will tell them much more about me.
That said, I favor Chromium over Chrome since I don't want to use any closed-source software on my systems.

As far as I know Chromium doesn't contain any usage tracking that can't be disable by the user. Chrome however has an RLZ parameter that is not optional.

I just installed the google-chrome-beta and I quite like it. Though the fonts do not get auto hinted like firewalker showed earlier. And I got to agree with ataraxia, Google has been there all the way.

try to start lxde-settings-daemon on X login... works here for the fonts.
Also there is a really nice mouse guesture addon now: mouse stroke. You can add any action you want, but it will only work with middle mouse button.

I don't see the conflict with the Iron browser using rapidshare. Rapidshare regularly patrols their content and removes any that violates copyright... Perhaps better distributors could be used but I have no idea how choosing a distributing link has anything to do with the quality of the content. Could you elaborate more?

Again A to B, we're talking about browser security, right? What does this have to do with creating a secure browser?
Google uses tracking to provide better services and I agree with it. However, with the amount of information that Google obtains it doesn't hurt me be a little cautious. I like Iron, it's a good browser, no DUF.

Well, nothing to do with security, I thought the point here was privacy, I've yet to hear that Chromium/Chrome is less secure than Iron.
Big adverts are intrusive and in that vein don't help promote what is trying to be advocated, I guess it's about standards.

There doesn't seem to be an option to change the language that Chrome uses. In screenshots I've seen of the language options in Windows, there is another dropdown which isn't present here. I see only options for spellcheck language. Can someone confirm this?

I'm guessing SRWare is doing the adverts because they have to pay people to do the actual work on Iron. But to how it is done, very true, and a good point.

I do hope someone will start a simple Mercurial fork of Chromium with the crap removed, Iron is nice but a giant tarball of the modified source isn't very nice to work with

You can simply disable Google Suggest etc. from the options dialogue. Afaik this browser id tracking thing is not available in Chromium anyway but Chrome.
Offline
RLZ tracker isn't there in Chromium. You can disable the other features in Chromium anyway.

Really what is needed is a real tracking free version of chrome, I can't imagine it would be more than commenting out a couple hundred lines *use a patch for that or something* and then you're always up to date with chromium latest builds.

If you disable google suggest in chromium then it is a tracking free version of chrome. This is why I don't understand the need for Iron.
Chrome has a few usage tracking methods that can be seen in detail on the chrome wiki or www.srware.net
However, Chromium only contains usage tracking for google suggest and if you mistype a url. Both of
these can be disabled easily in the menu under "Privacy."

I have to disable xcompmgr for Chrome to startup properly, otherwise half the screen is one big shadow. Also, could someone just go to the options menu and try to change the language. Go on, it'll only take a few clicks.

I prefer Iron over Chromium because of the build in Adblocker, that works better than any addon.

I'd seriously look at Privoxy over any addon / extension, especially if using more than on browser. It seems daft installing separate addons for each one when you can simply pass all of them through privoxy.

+1 for privoxy

To have Chrome/Chromium play nice with Xcompmgr on Openbox, go to "Options" >> "Personal Stuff" and select "Use system title bar and borders" and restart Chrome/Chromium.

After doing some digging on Google and it's policies , for me it's certain. I'll never use Google stuff anymore. Especially after their CEO gave this stupid interview where he states that " where you don't want to let people know what you're doing on the web, you should change your behavior." Pretty dumb.
I do like it that Google is giving weight against Redmond, which is good. However one of the reasons I use Linux is control over my system here, Google isn't part of that control, so bye bye, zwaai zwaai.

I use Iron (which works great) and I setup Scroogle (as in screw Google) as my default search engine. Click the wrench and select Options, then open the search alternatives and create a new one with
https://ssl.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/nbbwssl.cgi?Gw=%s
in the address field. This uses Scroogle's encrypted search, effectively blocking Google and most people to sniff your searches.

The chromium package in extra works well, I've just installed it. I won't use chromium as my main browser though.

Try Options/Privacy/Design (or something similar, I don't have chromium installed in English).
