since 2.6.31 my RT-2870 is not longer working
ifconfig says that the Wireless ra0 was renamed to wlan0 and since then its not longer working
since 2.6.32 my RT-2860 (build in) is not longer working too
it was renamed from ra0 to wlan0 too and read above^^
whats happening there?
since now i used wpa_supplicant but i already tried with NetworkManager and WICD
//Edit: 2870 works in 2.6.32

I have experienced this too.
In the logs it says rt2860sta is not capable of scanning for SSIDs anymore and there are a lot of errors. Strange.
On my eee I have now 2.6.31 again. I hope the wlan drivers get fixed before 2.6.32 moves to [core].

Perhaps it's loading those rt2x00* modules too. If it is, blacklist them in rc.conf.

I had the same problem. I am on 2.6.32 and i am using the staging rt2780sta. It scans SSIDs and works well. Please post your lsmod, dmesg and read the following arch wiki page. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rt2870

I had the same Problem, too. After reading this http://sidux.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-p-144921.html I copied the Firmware from http://w3you.com/dl/firmware/rt/ to /lib/firmware.
Now it works.

Edit:
Ok, it worked once, now it doesn't work anymore. No Idea.

I think we have to wait until 2.6.32.1 in the hope that its fixed there^^
Offline
I add
!rt2800usb !rt2x00lib !rt2x00usb
to MODULES in /etc/rc.conf
Now it works again.
Offline
Confirmed with RT2860 in eee 1000h.
Works fine again with rt2860sta.
Thanks rhfcaesar.
edit: Wrong... I have to confirm that it only works one time. After switching wlan of via the hotkey (which worked fine) I was not able to turn it on again though pressing the hotkey switched the LED that displays whether wlan is on.
Unloading and Loading rt2860 or pressing the hotkey gives no output in dmesg except for the warning that it is from staging. Absolutely no output in /var/log/everything.log
I think it is because /sys/class/rfkill does look really different (I think there is no rfkill for the wlan at all).

@rhfcaesar: MODULES = "!rt2x00usb ..." is enough for me.

It still does not work here im just getting a connection for about 1-5 minutes and then its killed and can not connect again

The AUR rt2870 package was updated to 2.3.0.0 today. It compiles and loads fine, but I can't scan or connect with it (I haven't played around with it, only checked if the module loads ok). You might like to give it a try, maybe it works for you?
A second suggestion for 2.2.0.0 would be to use the 2.6.31 kernel patch ( googling for 'rt2870-2.6.31.patch' will point you in the right direction).
Offline
But the main problem here is about the RT2860
Offline
I had a look at the rt2860 source, its very similar to rt2870. The patch almost applies cleanly:
2009_0918_RT2860_Linux_STA_v2.2.0.0]$ patch --dry-run -p1 < ~/rt2870-2.6.31.patch
patching file include/rtmp_os.h
patching file os/linux/rt_linux.c
Hunk #1 FAILED at 1621.
Hunk #2 succeeded at 1727 (offset 69 lines).
1 out of 2 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file os/linux/rt_linux.c.rej
patching file os/linux/rt_main_dev.c
Hunk #1 succeeded at 538 (offset 34 lines).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 569 (offset 34 lines).
Hunk #3 succeeded at 582 with fuzz 2 (offset 34 lines).
With a bit of tweaking, I think it might work for rt2860 2.2.0.0 for kernels 2.6.31+.

Same problem here. Awesome that others already found this, glad it is not just me.

i really hope it will be fixed with 2.6.32.1

2.6.32.1 is out. I didn't see anything in the change log that addresses this issue, but I have not tried it yet.

Can you connect to unencrypted wireless hotspot? On my Eee PC model 901 (which also use RT2860), wireless is working fine unless you're trying to connect to a hotspot that use WPA/WPA2 mixed mode encryption (connecting to hotspot that use WPA or WPA2 work fine).

This is why I have the kernel in IgnorePkgs. They really messed up ralink wireless with the release of 2.6.31.
I still haven't tried 2.6.32 but I'm reluctant to....
