usb very slow- defaults to usb 1.1

When I plug in a my usb drive i get this from dmesg:

running hdparam gives me this:

/dev/sdc1:

I think arch is defaulting to usb 1.1. How can I fix this?

Could it be that not all usb hubs on your machine are high speed hubs? What happens if you plug the usb stick in different usb hubs?

No, I'm sure they are all high speed hubs. The same thing happens when I plug it into different ones.

I should mention that this doesn't happen all the time. In fact, it only started around a couple months ago as far as I can tell.
