OSS: high pitched squeel unless I check "mix1-mute" help

I have a Gigabyte G41-M-ES2L with onboard Intel HD audio. When I'm using oss as my sound driver, there is an annoying high pitch beeeeeep sound at all times until I click the "mix1-mute" button via ossxmix. I'd like to understand more about this. Do I have it setup incorrectly?

Not really, if everything else works when you mute mix1 then just mute it and move on tongue

It may be that you are telling oss to record and playback on the same place thus making a feedback and making things sound like a train is coming ... sideways and at high speed tongue I can make that happen too with my notebook.

Maybe you can try to mute everything and unmute only the things you need.

Could be... do you or does anyone know of a good resource for oss out there?  The ossxmix is huge and confusing.  I would like to find something simple like aslaconf for alsa, but for oss.

I use ossxmix, never bothered to look for anything else, it comes with oss and does the job well so never felt the need to change.

It sounds like you have something set incorrectly. Make sure the fp-[color] parts ossxmix(the drop-down, specifically) are configured correctly.

Re: OSS: high pitched squeel unless I check "mix1-mute" help

If all you need is to have sound output then you can mute almost everything, most probably only the things related with green need to be unmuted.

Also for better sound quality change the vmix0-src to high.
