Mysterious HDD errors

Whenever installing packages from the CD distribution, I get the following unhelpful error:

ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen
ata2.00: unexpected or too much trailing data buf=131072 cur=131072 bytes=2048
ata2.00: cmd a0/00:00:00:00:fc/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 pio 131072 in
         cdb 28 00 00 00 03 c7 00 00  40 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
         res 58/00:02:00:00:08/00:00:00:00:00/a0 Emask 0x2 (HSM violation)
ata2.00: status: { DRDY DRQ }

Is there any way to increase the size of this buffer that is apparently full, or to slow down aif so it won't hammer the HDD into submission? I'm somewhat new to *nix.
