Re: [Solved] System freezes, how can I troubleshoot it?

I'm experiencing the same problem, but I'm using an Intel VGA.
A Memtest ran without errors. I think this issue is related to KMS, so I disabled it and now I'm not experiencing the problem anymore (uptime: more than 6 hours at the moment).

I think we should write our specs, so that we can identify the problem more easily.
Mine are:
Arch x86_64, Gnome 2.28, Xorg 1.7.3.901, VGA: Intel X3100

Hmm that sounds like a kernel panic. Could you check /var/log/kernel.log or  /var/log/messages.log and see of there is any error logged during he time your system froze.

I checked the logs that you suggested by I didn't see anything obvious listed around the time that it failed. I also ran memtest recently and that didn't report any errors either.

I just had another lock up a little while ago and one more thing that I noticed in addition to the magic sysreq key not working is that there was absolutely no hard drive activity after it locked up. My hd light didn't even flicker. I usually have some ocassional activity there, even when not doing anything.

I'd really like to get this resolved, Arch is by far my favorite distro that I have tried. I'd hate to have to switch to something else. sad

Edit:
Arch x86_64, kde 4.3.4, kernel 2.6.31.6-1, xorg-server 1.7.3.901-1

Edit 2:
One other thing that I just noticed, I'm not sure if it matters or not. My system shows that I have both xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-vesa installed. Is it ok to have both of these installed? I remember seeing in one of my log files something about both of these being found, like it wasn't right.

Having xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-vesa is fine. I also have them. but mine is intel though.
So if you have kms enabled try disabling that.

Thanks

I just did this. Let's hope that it helps. Do you know if there's a way to tell for sure that the kms is disabled?

Check /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf and see

options i915 modeset=0.

Other than that if kms is not enabled during boot up your screen resolution wont be set correctly until login manager kicks in.

Thanks
