USB Audio (no sound)

I am unable to get my USB speakers to work with my fresh install of Arch.  I have switched from ubuntu and got everything else working.  I just can't seem to get my speakers working.

I followed the beginners guide to Arch initially.  The USB speakers did not work after the install.  I then proceeded to try the steps on installing PulseAudio.  It still does not work.

The sound is not muted and it appears to recognize the USB speakers are attached, but I get no sound.

[steven@steven-arch ~]$ lsmod |grep '^snd' | column -t
snd_usb_audio 106304 0
snd_usb_lib 20672 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_rawmidi 26752 1 snd_usb_lib
snd_seq_dummy 3588 0
snd_seq_oss 36320 0
snd_seq_midi_event 8640 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 64768 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device 8372 4 snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
snd_pcm_oss 47360 0
snd_mixer_oss 21024 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_hda_codec_idt 75984 1
snd_hda_intel 32232 0
snd_hda_codec 83200 2 snd_hda_codec_idt,snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep 10056 2 snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm 91848 4 snd_usb_audio,snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_timer 25456 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd 77224 13 snd_usb_audio,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hda_codec_idt,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_timer
snd_page_alloc 10832 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

I certainly could have compounded my initial issue with a conflict between alsa and pulseaudio...  In any case, what can I do know?

Thanks in advance,
Steven

Re: USB Audio (no sound)

Looks like you now have two sound cards. Try temporarily disabling your internal sound card in the BIOS or by blacklisting snd_hda_intel then try speaker-test -Dsurround51:default -c6 -twav (that's the command I use to test by 5.1 speakers attached to my USB 8 channel sound card).

Are you sure you unmuted the correct card in alsamixer (F6)?

Re: USB Audio (no sound)

I disabled the sound card in the bios and it appears to work now.  However I am not sure if it is using pulse or alsa now.  I know that sounds like a silly question, but how do I make sure which one is operational?

Re: USB Audio (no sound)

For pulse you can check using pavucontrol. Just ps -e | grep pulse wouldn't work because it may not have any outputs loaded.

If you installed pulse and didn't uninstall it, you're using it. You can not disable your internal sound card and just use both soundcards with pulse, its not too hard. Just use pavucontrol to move streams to the sound card you want, or disable the sound card in the configuration there. Easier to backtrack from that than disabling the internal soundcard via BIOS or module blacklist.
