I've been using Logitech for quite some time now (used to use the MX500, upgraded to the G5 which I am currently using now), but the scroll wheel is starting to go. Touching it lightly scrolls in 1 direction or the other, and I always HATED the horizontal scrolling. Impossible to use mouse3 without randomly pressing it to a side.
I have a Razer Copperhead, but I'm trying to get away from the "Gaming" mouses. I've grown out of the shiny LED phase, and the pulsing blue of the Razer doesn't really grab my interest anymore.
So I was wondering what people used for mice. I would like it to satisfy a few requirements:
No horizontal scroll
back button (forward button optional)
DPI doesn't matter much (I used the G5 on the middle setting, which is 800 I think?)
Preferred wired.
Any suggestions?

Broaden your mind and try out a Logitech Trackman Marble.

They have served my family well since we moved away from mousing!

I kind of wanted to stay with a regular mouse, I do play some PC games

I bought one of these for one of the guys at work who has limited desk space. It's quite cool to use! I especially like the fact that it looks like some sort of weird one eyed fish.
I would stick with Logitech. I use a couple of different models, VX Revolution, VX Nano, MX1100 and a couple of others. At the moment I'm using a Logitech M305 which is my emergency mouse. Normally leave it in the car just in case I forget my normal laptop mice. I think just about all of them have side scroll. I haven't had to muck around with configuring mice in Xorg, mine have always just worked, could you remap the side scroll buttons to mouse 3 somehow? Perhaps xmodmap could do it.

Well now, there is no stopping you from havin more than one mouse. I have a Razer Diamonback connected to another USB port to satisfy my gaming needs.

I will probably stay with logitech, there only seems to be 3 big companies, and I'd rather not buy a microsoft one
I'll check out the G9, thank you for the suggestion. All others still welcome!

+1 for the G9, it's really nice, specially the in mouse profiles, exchangable shells, and that you can choose if you want steps of freescroll for the mouse wheel.

Having a trackball doesn't stop me from gaming. I play everything from Nexuiz to Diablo on mine. A Kensington that sucks. It got two buttons, a shiny ball, and mechanical sensors that forces me to clean it a little too often. Too bad that the next step is a Trackball with 4 buttons, scroll, laser...for $200
They don't have anything else here. =p

Another vote for the G9, as it's the best I've ever owned. I even purchased a 2nd one to keep on hand for when this one wears out.
