For the last couple of weeks the NZ (unofficial) mirror -the only one in this country- hasn't been synching properly. The people who run it are being quite helpful in trying to sort it out but are a little unclear about what the issue is.
This evening they asked me to take a look at the .mirrorsync.history directory and see what was going wrong. However, I am not the best person to ask about this stuff.
The full address is http://mirror.ihug.co.nz/archlinux/.mirrorsync.history
Could someone who is familiar with how mirrors work have a look at it and see if there is anything in there that would help them sort it out? We don't have much broadband down here and are pretty reliant on this one mirror...

It seems, for whatever reason, the mirror they are synching from is up-to-date, and the sync.history is showing that they are pulling in new packages, but for some reason there are still a lot of older packages in the repo that haven't been updated.
You can compare here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis … a/os/i686/
http://mirror.ihug.co.nz/archlinux/extra/os/i686/
Does anyone have an idea why this would happen? Do they need to flush it and rebuild?

Just got a note from the mirror admin:
Just turned on debug output, and found I'd somehow excluded both arch types. :-(
Fixed now; should be in sync in about an hour.

wow! I didn't know there was an NZ mirror, thanks
i imagine the aussie ones are still faster though :S

Heh. Depends. If, like me, your international traffic is throttled to 30 K/s, then the local mirror is a lot faster than anything else...

haha well yeah i did a rankmirrors and it came out way on top. syncs pretty fast too

The local (NZ) mirror is MUCH faster than the Aussie ones for me (on Xnet). Thanks for getting this sorted - I've come to rely on the NZ mirror for its speed, and was sorry when it had lost sync.
Incidentally, some of the aussie mirrors got well behind in their sync too a few weeks back.

No problem: it's good to know that there are other Kiwi Archers using the mirror.
At LCA in a couple of weeks I am going to lobby some of the other organizations that maintain linux/bsd mirrors here to include Arch, so we aren't just reliant on the one.

Good stuff. My grandmother and father are also running Arch - but of course I've got 'em started on it. It's actually MUCH easier to deal with / maintain / update than other distros (and of course than Windows) once set up, which makes my job as family computer tech much faster and more simple!
