Re: [was solved...]ATI + KMS issues, kernel 2.6.31.4 performance

I will re-format my system.... I don't see other option. I have the testing repo on, downgrading makes a lot of dependency conflits so it's not a solution.

ps: one friend of mine updated he's system with a GMA950 from 2.6.31.3 to 2.6.31.4 and now it is also with the same problem as I... almost zero fps's in 3D gaming.

TigTex, did you read flamelab's posting? There should not be any problems with downgrading. Reinstalling your whole system to downgrade is like killing a fly with a nuclear bomb. tongue

lol If the fly is a big pain in the ass... yep, a nuclear bomb should be enough.

And if i change my gpu to an older nvidia geforce4 that i have here? it would be faster and works...

Because if everytime that I run pacman -Syu I get problems with ati or intel cards... nvidia is the way to go...

Re: [was solved...]ATI + KMS issues, kernel 2.6.31.4 performance

Install the Nvidia to relief yourself from the painful ATi. I got disgusted by the veeeeeery slow development from catalyst (and the dropped support for all cards before HD2xxx) and the slow development of the opensource ones. I bought a GTS250 and I feel calmer again, in both Windows 7 and Arch.

If you don't want though to change the card, just

pacman -Syyuu

Do what the wiki says in order to disable KMS.

First thing I did. Worked before updating my system with kernel 2.6.31.4 (had 2.6.31.3 with the ati driver in extra repo). Now, everything is broken

reinstall the kernel or at least recreate the initrd.

Re: [was solved...]ATI + KMS issues, kernel 2.6.31.4 performance

I found now that nomodeset solves the problem and this problem is somehow related to xbmc. 3d games are running just fine with good glxgears score... I'm trying to build xbmc-svn to see if it solves anything

Re: [was solved...]ATI + KMS issues, kernel 2.6.31.4 performance

I decided to kill a fly with a nuclear bomb... I've just formated my mediacenterPC.

Results: SAME THING!

Even with the new xorg updates, some software is acting stupid, like xbmc, I only have 3fps ,and image rendering looks like a pentium mmx working. KMS is disabled and still can't find a solution to this. Reinstalled everything so it's a software bug.

but for example, armagetronad, teeworlds, wormux, runs just fine with good fps's. glxgears is also giving-me normal scores (1.4kfps)

Re: [was solved...]ATI + KMS issues, kernel 2.6.31.4 performance

hmm... I don't know if this helps, but for me it wasn't enough to disable modeset in kernel line in grub.conf (nomodeset).
I'm not sure why, when I set 'options radeon modeset=0' in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf, my compiz started to work again.
Until then just white screen... (ati x200)
Have you tried that already?

Wait for Mesa 7.6. I've also written that on the Wiki. I propose to everyone to check out on the ATi wiki page for updates, there is always something that could be updated or added.

Already did "options radeon modeset=0"

Mesa 7.6 is in testing repo i think... already have it.

Wait for it to pass to extra, don't mess up with testing since you already have a problem.

Re: [was solved...]ATI + KMS issues, kernel 2.6.31.4 performance

Hello there. I've waited untill mesa 7.6 came into extra... I've enabled KMS again. But when I do glxgears I only get 400fps. Before enabling the KMS I get 1400fps (not that this is much better for mobility x1400)

Anyhow I've checked if direct rendering is enabled and all that:

I've even added "radeon modeset=1" to my /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf file according to the http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … _.28KMS.29

Re: [was solved...]ATI + KMS issues, kernel 2.6.31.4 performance

If you try xf86-video-ati-git from AUR, is it different ?

I have an X1400 and running xf86-video-ati-git from AUR. Also have the latest mesa from [extra]. I too have to disable KMS to get decent framerates - can't use Compiz either. Other than the poor 3D performance, it works "fine".

Re: [was solved...]ATI + KMS issues, kernel 2.6.31.4 performance

Well, the whole thing is this:

KMS, even though it was implemented into Fedora's kernel last year, had seen wide development this year.

For now, it is in a satisfactory state, "just OK", meaning that 3D is enabled, DRI2 as well, that means that most (or all) of the artifacts that we have seen will disappear.

The slow 3D compositing is Mesa's problem mostly, since 3D compositing with KMS enabled or not, passes through Mesa.

Every new kernel release, KMS should be more stable and every Mesa release, 3D and DRI2 acceleration are going to be faster.

For now, disable KMS, if you want performance. After .32 kernel and Mesa 7.7 are declared stable, the Radeons up to R5xx will have nice performance and the R6xx/R7xx will be in the current stage that the older Radeons are.

PS.: And the R8xx won't have 3D until summer of 2010.

Yeah. That is pretty much what I've gathered as well. Things are still pretty new, and I've not even thought of starting to post performance related bug reports yet smile I can live without KMS, and try it again after a while when the dust settles. Thanks for the clarification though!

No I have not.

I've searched with yaourt and I think this version is the one you mean? aur/xf86-video-ati-git 20091022-1 (158) ?

Just to make things right. First I have to remove extra/xf86-video-ati like this: yaourt -Rd xf86-video-ati
And after that without rebooting or restarting X I just install the AUR version yaourt -S xf86-video-ati-git ?

How much fps's do you get with xf86-video-ati-git and disabled KMS?

I know it's not much of a benchmark, but glxgears gives me 1100 FPS on this setup.

Hm.. I've tested now xf86-video-ati-git and xf86-video-ati and there is not much of a difference. In fact xf86-video-ati seems to be a little faster. Though gxgears shows now only 1200 FPS. and gtkperf 5.19

Re: [was solved...]ATI + KMS issues, kernel 2.6.31.4 performance

Can I revive this thread to say that I've noticed regressions in kernel 2.6.32? I have no idea what my framerate was before I used modesetting and I actually have no desire to go back. I *like* the modesetting driver if only for the framebuffer console which I use a lot, but here are my glxgears framerates now:

kernel26-2.6.31.6: 220fps
kernel26-2.6.32.1: 10fps

Something is obviously very wrong. In both cases I am using xf86-video-ati from git master on Oct 08 2009, mesa from git master on Dec 16 2009, libdrm 2.4.16 and xorg-server 1.6.3.901. I have had tried the newer xserver (and the newer DDX designed for it) but have had issues which I think are unrelated to modesetting.

Also using drm-next for kernel 2.6.32 doesn't help much. It makes the framerate go up to maybe 20fps. With every release I am told by #radeon regulars that the next release should solve most of my problems but this seems like a mirage. Now they are telling me to compile drm-radeon-testing which is a 2.6.29 kernel but somehow has newer drm code. Has anyone done this? Is it worth a try?

ConnorBehan - your enthusiasm is appreciated, but posting in every ATI/KMS related thread is not productive. If you want to discuss issues with the 2.6.32 kernel, which is still in testing, stick to this thread please.
