ati 4890 - xorg 1.7.2 - catalyst?

well , hello everyone smile i had an idea and i want your opinion ,
i have ati 4890 graphics card and i wondered if i can install the catalyst drivers..(i know that arch dropped support since xorg 1.6) and i dont want to experiment with compiling kernels and downgrades tongue (yet)
, so here is my idea , what about if i download the official ati drivers from amd's site and install them.. , it says that the support the current 1.7.2 xorg , will this work for me?
i'd love to hear your opinion:)
on the other way , am i going to be ok with radeon hd drivers?(if i don't make it with catalyst)

thanks for your time:)

Re: ati 4890 - xorg 1.7.2 - catalyst?

The catalyst driver does not support xorg 1.7 yet, and probably won't for some time. (my bet is no support until the next ubuntu release, that's what happened the last two times hmm)

You probably want to read trough and follow this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57084

The free xf86-video-ati and -radeonhd drivers have partly support for the card. 2d should work, 3d will be limited.

Edit: Do _not_ download and build directly from amd.com. Always use makepkg/pacman or you will just end up in a world of pain.

Re: ati 4890 - xorg 1.7.2 - catalyst?

Would suggest getting away from catalyst.

I'm running a 4850X2 on the open source ati driver from git. With the .32-rc8 kernel, no issues with 3d rendering. Using X 1.7.1

If you want to try it, get the latest kernel, drm, and mesa from the AUR. Howto in this thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79509

Re: ati 4890 - xorg 1.7.2 - catalyst?

I would try out the opensource drivers, except that I got the 5xxx .. the 5870 to be specific.. also known as the Evergreen series.

The opensource drivers do not support these series at all (they were released in september). The proprietary drivers are the only thing that support it.

I can't find a good way to install xorg <1.7 either... is there another solution?

Read the catalyst bar and grill thread.
